Kia Telluride

Large, bold, capable and comfortable, the midsize Kia Telluride SUV opens the door to exploring in a whole new way. Imagined in America, designed at Kia's design studio in California, and assembled in Georgia , the Telluride is all about big skies, desert roads, mountain passes, shady forests, smooth highways, and long coastal drives. The largest Kia ever, it provides comfortable seating for up to eight, a powerful 291-hp 3.8-litre V6, available active on-demand all-wheel drive, and an inspiring view of the world. In short, the Kia Telluride offers potential for exploration and adventure every time it's on the road.

Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the U.S. and is a product of the Kia Design Center in Irvine, CA. From the first pencil stroke it was meant to convey the kind of presence associated with the original legendary SUVs - big, bold and boxy - and the go-anywhere, do-anything attitude their square, burly-shouldered shapes suggested. The Kia Telluride's sophisticated exterior accents also hint at its interior luxury. Main design cues include:

- Long, broad hood and wide grille
- Bold, stacked headlamps convey power and stability
- Upright windshield and clean side profile conveys muscular tension
- Inverted "L" tail lamps with LED stripes (standard on EX and SX trims)
- Elongated nameplates on the leading edge of the hood and on the liftgate provide distinctive identity for flagship SUV
- Sculpted rear skid plate with integrated twin exhaust tips reference off-road ability and power (standard on S, EX and SX trims)

Kia Telluride SUV gets eight seats and all-terrain response

Largest Kia yet was designed specifically for the US, but some of its technology will make it to Europe

Kia has revealed its largest model yet, the eight-seat Telluride SUV, with an all-terrain response system that's set to be used on Sportage and Sorento SUVs in the future.

The Telluride, unveiled at Detroit motor show, is designed specifically for the US and will not be sold in mainland Europe or the UK. However, some of its technology will trickle down to more familiar models, such as the seven-seat Sorento and five-seat Sportage.

On sale later this year, the Telluride uses a 3.8-litre GDi V6 petrol engine making 287bhp and 262lb ft of torque. The car was first hinted at when a Telluride concept was revealed at the 2016 Detroit motor show, featuring 3D printed parts and a hybrid powertrain. It has a sibling in the Hyundai Palisade, which was revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last November.

The Telluride has four driving modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort – as well as two different settings, Snow and AWD lock, for more specific driving conditions. In Eco and Smart, 100% of power is delivered to the front wheels. Comfort and Snow deliver 80% of power to the front wheels and 20% to the rear, while Sport splits the power 65/35 between the front and rear. Lock delivers power evenly to all four wheels.

The Telluride also introduces Bluetooth connectivity that allows two phones to connect simultaneously. This is another feature expected to appear on European Kias in the next couple of years.

Following the launch of the Telluride, a Kia pick-up truck based on the same platform is expected, following a Hyundai model due in 2020.

New Kia Telluride unveiled with eight seats and V6 power

The new Kia Telluride has been unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with the Korean automaker describing the eight-seater as the “largest Kia ever”.

Conceived at Kia’s design studio in California and assembled in Georgia, the boxy new Telluride will – initially, at least – not be sold in Europe (nor in South Africa). Indeed, the automaker says it is the first Kia “designed specifically for the US”.

The firm says the Telluride provides “comfortable seating for up to eight” and draws its urge from a naturally aspirated 3,8-litre V6 petrol engine worth 217 kW and 355 N.m. It will be offered in North America with an eight-speed automatic transmission and active on-demand all-wheel drive.

A self-levelling rear suspension set-up will also be offered, with the ride height automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load.

Inside the three-row SUV, you’ll find grab handles integrated into the centre console, plus (optional) double-stitched, quilted and extra-padded Nappa leather, “simulated” brushed metal and matte-finished wood.

All manner of driver-assistance systems will be offered, from high-beam assist and lane-departure warning to a blind-spot view monitor and smart cruise control (with a stop and go function). In addition, the driver is able to use a microphone to “enhance communication” with second- and third-row passengers, while a so-called “quiet mode” cuts audio output in the second and third rows.

Kia gets star spangled with boxy eight-seat Telluride SUV

Kia is aiming straight for the jugular of the North American SUV market with its first-ever Telluride.

Designed in Kia’s California design studio and built at the Korean carmaker’s production facility in Georgia, it is unashamedly “big, bold and boxy”, in Kia’s very own words. Seating up to eight occupants, it’s aimed primarily at the US market, but probably won't ever find its way to South Africa.

With its stacked headlights, huge grille and boxy shape, the large sport utility looks as American as apple pie. Slotting in above the Sorento in size terms, it certainly qualifies as large in our opinion, although Kia actually refers to it as “mid-sized”.

Kia resisted the temptation to source a V8 motor from its Genesis sister brand however, but the Telluride does at least have a normally aspirated 3.8-litre direct injection V6, which qualifies as semi-American in the greater scheme of things, and it’s plenty powerful too with max outputs of 217kW and 355Nm.

The SUV will be sold in front-wheel-drive and permanent all-wheel-drive configurations (with Snow and AWD Lock modes in addition to four regular driver-selectable modes). Power in both cases is delivered by an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and self-levelling rear suspension is also part of the deal.

The cabin offers some high-end trimmings and features, including quilted Nappa leather upholstery, faux brushed metal and matte-finished wood trim, a 630-watt 10 speaker Harman/Kardon audio system and wireless phone charging, while safety kit includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection and much more. A built-in modem also allows many vehicle functions to be controlled remotely.

Furthermore, the front and middle seat rows are available with heating and ventilation while a roof-mounted climate control system regulates temperatures for the second and third rows.
