KIA: are not covering themselves in glory

KIA are not covering themselves in glory here. This is the second incident in the news for KIA service garages.

KIA Edenvale - No joke as car falls off hoist

A shocked motorist watched in horror as his car, which was being serviced, fell off a hoist, causing thousands of rand in damage.

While he was waiting for the car to be serviced at the Kia Edenvale service centre, Phillip Grobler heard a loud bang and saw staff scurrying around, looking at him, some laughing.

He went into the service area and, to his horror, saw his car “dangling” at an angle from the hoist.

...

KIA Boksburg - Customer's Kia taken home, stolen

A Boksburg motorist is horrified after finding out that her Kia bakkie, which she took in for a 20 000km service, was stolen from the home of one of the dealership’s mechanics who had apparently taken it for personal use.

Now, although the vehicle has been recovered, Rashika Dhanashwarlall is demanding a new vehicle from Kia East Rand. She says hers was damaged during the theft and has also been reclassified by the police as a stolen vehicle.

...

If this is the sort of reptation they are making for themselves, it's safe to say I ain't buying a KIA anytime soon.

Personally I'd also fork out a bit extra for piece of mind. But this is South Africa, these things happen.
That lady who's car was wrecked a while back by a mechanic that took it for a joyride, wasn't that an Audi?

I have a Kia, good car, but will think twice when buying a new car because they are the 2nd most expensive car for spare parts.

So according to Mct, you should be very wary of Samsung products, because the oks at Brakenjanville TV repairs dropped a Samsung TV.

Or be careful of Coke products, because the coke display fell over at the Germaanstad Pick n Pay.

Or be careful of Durban, because a shark got a surfer at the noth pier.

Or be careful of Netcare hospitals, cause my oupa died in one of them?

What is the logic of comparing a Korean manufacturer with an South African owned vehicle service center?

They also do Daihatsu - and we most certainly won't buy one again after our experience with Kia Randburg.
1.) Was near impossible to get the sale done (never returning calls, etc)
2.) Ended up with two different locknuts on the wheels and no keys - we had to have them drilled out when my wife got a flat.
3.) When Nr 2 happened I actually mentioned to them via various platforms that I hope they at least got the maintenance plan correct. They did not, when we took it for a service, they hadn't done the maintenance plan, we lost the use of the vehicle for a two days while a Kia dealership in Cape town tried to sort it out.

Also, Kia Tableview tried to sell us an accident damaged vehicle, they sent it for the wrong test at their testing center, and everything, tyres, body work etc came back as near perfect.

I requested that it be sent to a different testing center for a proper test, ended up with body work having been done to the rear, was sent in dirty, which made it difficult for the testing center to check properly, tyres only had 2mm left,.

Their products seem pretty good, but their SA service is lacking.

I love the fact that the dealership uses this indemnity form as some kind of cover... If they're negligent and the mechanic didn't put the car on the hoist properly, they are liable as far as I am concerned.

Rather amusing comment under the one story
Reminds me of an incident many years ago. Took my car for a service, was called to say they were waiting for a part and my car would only be ready the next day. Went out that evening with a mate and spotted my car in our local shopping mall parking lot, went home, got the spare key and drove my car home. Next day the dealership called in the afternoon and told me the part had still not arrived. Next day I went to the dealer and demanded to know what was going on. My car was of course 'taken to another branch that has the part' Man, did they hop on the spot with excuses. I demanded a loan car until they sort it out, drove the branch manager's fancy car around for 4 days until they called and admitted my car had been stolen. Never paid for that service, drove the heck out of their car, and they were very relieved that my car wasn't stolen.

What he's saying is if you buy a Kia, you most likely going to have to take it to the dealership to keep it under warranty for services. Being tied to irresponsible dealerships is something you have to take into account before buying a Kia.

Personally if I find out that anything happened to my car, such as mechanics taking it home for personal use, there will be media attention and a law suit against said dealership as well as a charge of theft against that mechanic.

My wife's Kia Picanto costed almost as much as my Audi to service.
Kia also overfilled the gearbox with oil, by about a liter.

I would not buy a Kia.

Nevermind that. Their engines just have no zest. Drove a 2.0 Cerato, and it's just plain sluggish!

I went to look at the Sportage last week.

The young dealer said that they don't allow test drives & don't really order new cars because the waiting list is too long. I should pick one of the 2 on the floor.

He then also referred to their accounts lady "quite a bitch" when discussing how they fight for the best bank offer.

Yeah, no thanks.

I have owned 3 brands of cars, Opel, Kia and VW.
After 12 years of various car ownerships, I just realised most dealerships sucks when it comes to after sales support, not just car part prices.
Here are a few gems:
New cup holder for my VW polo, current one is working, just has a scratch: R2500. For a fancy piece of plastic.
Opel Corsa left rear door central locking stuffed: R1800 for actuator.
Kia Picanto rear drum brakes, skim drums and replace brakes: R2000 (had it done at a brake and clutch place for ~R500).

Not to mention VW refusing to tell me how to replace a certain part (rear door electric window button), saying I must bring in the car, even if it's out of warranty. Opel taking 3 returns to fix an oil leak :( I always take my car to a trusted independent mechanic when out of warranty, normally my costs drop by about a 30% even 50% in some cases.

Picanto was written off, got a Rio as replacement, but took a maintenance plan, so we will see when it runs out. Support so far from Kia Fourways has been good, but it's early days.

Terrible news for a company on the rise although as others have said it seems good service is a rarity in SA :( At least they are paying to fix that car unlike Audi who refused to pay for that RS4 that was written off on a joy ride.

Here's a company that takes service seriously. You leave it there in the morning and they drop it off in the afternoon.

:D
