Kick-off For Tv Upgrade

 dreamon boys...This is africa!!...Has multichoice not done that exercise with the small set-top box made by UEC?..there are still people watching on black and white TV's. Just switch off the terrestrial TV network and get a more powerfull satellite so you can use a smaller dish.
Same as Worldspace radio. There are only five analog channels to choose from, Sabc1,2,3 E-tv and M-net the rest of the vhf and uhf band is wasted.
So why go to digital terrestrial TV broadcasting? use the satelites!! is the goverment going to sponser the people with set-top compatible tv's...
We already have a set-top digital receiver available from UEC, Just change the tuner.

I'm all for it. The set top boxes are pretty cheap and easy to install and dont require a dish. Go digital and invite more people to get licenses.

@fubar - Why make the entire nations viewing capabilities dependent on a satellite? One problem with the satellite or someone decides its no longer economically viable and there's no signal.

Sentech hopes to complete the upgrade in time for the 2010 soccer World Cup.

Hmmm, I'd say they have to complete it in time for 2010, hopes is not a word which should be associated with such an event.

One reason why Digital Terrestial is a better option is that one of the most expensive parts in Satellite TV transmission is the Sattellite bandwidth and if you are going to have to be broadcasting HDTV like for the 2010 worldcup then DT is the way to go.

Anyway the DT receiver is going to be even more low-cost than anything else before it in the SA market. DT is going to happen, it's a matter of when and it seems the best time to spend all the money of upgrading while all this money for the 2010 worldcup is being pumped into the country. Lets just hope they learn from ESKOM and don't understimate the growth of the country.

The real question is whether the government is going to use this as an opportunity to invest in SA (UEC) or to outsource to a Korean company to maybe get the best deal.
