I'm thinking about getting a kindle 3G for basic web browsing including sending mails through gmail.

Which model has the most usable browser? I like the idea of having a keyboard but I hear navigating the web is awful with the little arrow keys. How about the Touch Model? Does that make navigating the web any better, How does one go about doing typing on the touch device?

The fire, but afaik that one does not have free 3g and its basically a droid tablet.

On all the others the browser is barely functional. I could not even access my gmail from it. As for browsing, its hit and miss. Some sites work well, others not at all. Its an ebook reader first and foremost. If you get it for the browser you will be seriously disappointed.

Agree - browsing is slow, black and white and overall just not worth it.

Rather get a 2nd hand tablet.

It's an eBook with a beta-browser - which they pulled free-3G support for (due to costs). The browser is fine for articles but fail for everything else, so look elsewhere if you want a browser.

What everybody else said. You do not want a kindle to browse the net with.
It's fine for browsing the amazon store and looking at articles like they say, but it's much too painful to navigate with.

Yip. This.

One of the contentions above is not entirely true: full free-for-life browsing IS still a permanent feature in the so-called Kindle 3, or Kindle Keyboard, the model now being discontinued overseas but still widely available here. It has some limitations (no downloads, streaming etc.) but is otherwise fully functional and works an absolute treat in SA on the Vodacom network, with nothing to pay, ever. It's ideal for things like checking news headlines, weather or even MyBB in bed, for example! But it's not going to break any speed records.

The new Kindle 3G version still has 'free for life' 3G access -- but in principle ONLY for Amazon and Wikipedia.
