Kindle Fire HD apps

I just bought my mom a kindle fire HD and was horrified to find out that you cannot download any apps at all from the Amazon app store. Are there any alternatives or workarounds to this? I really don't want to root or do anything odd to it.

I understand that Amazon is allowing some non-Amazon apps in, but as to the which I haven't the foggiest ...

You might have to change its location to US, not sure if its too late but create a US account and then link it ?

The only thing you can do is run a VPN and register as a USA customer. But even then - credit card billing address needs to be in USA and your residential address needs to be USA. It can be done but it is tricky. Just like the iPad - many things are locked in South Africa. Music, movies and apps are all region locked. But you can get books

Have the same problem. Loaded SnapPea on PC then Fire HD. Now I can load from Google Play.
