Kindle Fire Tips, Tricks and How to's

I took the jump (the rooting jump) and enjoyed every moment of it.

I was pretty afraid to route the nut but cracked it first time around. This guy gave advice and tools to do it but you also need to read the comments as there are corrections you need to add. http://rootkindlefire.com/kindle-fire-root/how-to-root-kindle-fire-for-mac-osx-or-linux/

Now my clever friends (and I mean it well); I have now routed the KIndle Fire; now what now? ;-) I can now get some apps from LinH and other recommended in this threat.

LinH any nice apks you can mail would be appreciated at johanhorak at gmail dot com.

BTW: I think I had to root because I don't have an android device to copy apps to as I could not get a file manager downloaded from Amazon (not in the USA region). I tried to use an emulator for mac but that was a pain to learn.

How on earth is the fact that it has a 7-inch screen a software design fault? I get that the reviews were middling and it's a pretty flawed piece of hardware but he makes some very peculiar arguments. Hooray husbands can finally hide browsing history from wives!

Oh good nothing like from the horses mouth..I've also been afraid to root and will also probably go for it.

I can mail but now that you have access o the market yourself you can also download.

By the way you still could have downloaded Explorer directly to your Fire by finding an alternate source for the apps. Just saying. I just wanted to make sure I had the safest instal.

Have you installed Google services framework yet? So you get access to all Googles services.

Depends on what you want to do on the device. I have APks for services like Skype, Dropbox, Facebook app etc.

By the way I use the Ice Cream Sandwhich launcher over and above go launcher. Some glitches as it is early days but still usable.
 
Nice to finally correspond with people who are actually using the device..I've become very reliant on US forums.
 
Im planning on getting one for the wife for Christmas but would like some info if possible.

How does it handle movies, I mean HD 720 and higher? Does one have to transfer the file to the device or could it be set up to stream from a home network for example. Same with music.

From previous posts it seems Gmail, Skype, Twitter and browsing are not an issue. What about books? Can one transfer any old ebook and read it? For new books do you have to use Amazon or can you buy from various online sources?

Feedback would be appreciated.
 
can you connect a 3g modem such as a cell c speed stick to the kindle fire?
wi-fi isnt always an available option for me.

Another cool tip - how to get streaming video (or documents...) on your kindle fire

you will need:


  • in es file explorer - at the top left-hand corner click local and it will give you the option to connect to your lan (amongst others) login with your computers username and password
  • share your movies folder on your pc.
  • browse to it using the es file explorer on the kindle.
  • find the movie you want to play (doesn't play everything but i got 720p mkv's playing) if you find a better video player that works let me know

Um, no. The drivers and software on the stick are for Windows systems.
Theoretically you would have to get linux based drivers and install them on your android device, but I doubt you will find any.
Does the Kindle Fire even have a normal sized USB port?

Do I understand correct that if i root my kindle i can get games etc. for it ? Bought one and brought it back to uk but not that much use now.

Any sites where I could download apps from, tried getjar.com but still not working

I've converted some books using Calibre so that I can use the kindle reader app and then left others in say EPUB format and used another e-reader like Aldiko which I happen to like.

If you use Calibre to convert to MOBI make sure you add the serial number of your Kindle to the custom plug in. If you run into further problems make sure the "personal doc tag" field under MOBI output is clear. It was only after doing both that I was able to open up the books without getting a DRM error as well as getting them to display properly in the carousal and library.

Related to this is when side loading non-Amazon MOBI books make sure you put them into the Fire's Documents folder. Only then will they show up in the carousal and your bookshelf.

I have noticed that the Amazon Kindle App unfortunately does not work properly when using an alternate launch screen. It only allows you to open up the book last read. I use ICS.

Well it depends how limited the selection of games is. If you're not happy with what's available you will have to root. If you are well then not. Try other sites like SlideMe etc. There are many. I've been meaning to check out some of the sites from http://mobiputing.com/2011/06/17-places-to-download-android-apps/ if you're interested.
 
Well I got it and am now facing the situation where I can't do anything to it due to not having an American CC. Time to get hands dirty with ADB I reckon.
