Hi,

Thinking of getting myself a kindle - is it worth it? What is the average cost of a best seller novel on average. Can one buy everything in SA?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks

Yes it's completely worth it, if you're an avid reader.
The cost of novels differ from store to store, but usually a tad cheaper than the books itself. $10-$15 on Amazon.

Your best bet is to buy it directly from Amazon.

epub and mobi.
You can obviously open pdf and txt in it too.

The native kindle format is .azw or .kf8

Since I don't always carry my kindle around with me I love that I can read my books on any of my phone, laptop or kindle, picking up where I left off last on any of the devices.

Absolutely worth it if you are an avid reader. I have read over 40 books on my Kindle in the past 6 months. Versus the cost of actual books, it has paid for itself already.

Worth it. Too bad we're not getting the white one. I'd love to gift it to myself for Xmas.

Just a question on the books... after your purchase do you have an option to make a backup and if so how is this done i.e. can you make a backup to a SD card or PC for example?

If there is no such backup is one able to download them again?

Sorry for my ignorance, not sure how a Kindle works exactly, guess I should go and Google and find out :D

Yes you can connect your kindle via usb to the pc, it will then show up as a removable storage drive on the pc - you are then able to copy / paste from the kindle to the pc and vice versa.

I need to look into this but I'm still so much into my 'paper' books. Nothing nicer than heading down to that 2nd hand book shop on the Gordon Bay's beach front to swap out my old reads with some new ones.

Those that love reading and know the shop will know what I'm talking about... But then again, I do travel quite a bit, not that I read much while traveling but it would be nice for on the plane etc..

I'm selling my Kindle Keyboard for R750 if anyone is interested.

Upgrading :)

Which type of Kindle? The e-ink readers or the kindle fire?
And what do you primarily want to use it for?

To correct something mentioned earlier in this thread: the Kindle does NOT read the EPUB format -- you need MOBI or Kindle's own AZW or KF8. The Kobo being sold for R995 by Pick&Pay, conversely, will only read EPUB and not Amazon's MOBI etc. However the freebie Calibre download is your friend and makes conversion between formats child's play.

Definitly worth it. I love my Kindle Touch. However there is a new Kindle available now (paperwhite) which Amazon isn't shipping to SA yet. You might want to wait a while and get the new one when they expand their shipping destinations. When it comes to buying it, just buy it directly through Amazon, it's cheaper than trying to source it here and is extremely quick and painless. My kindle arrived in SA 3 days after I ordered it through Amazon.

ebooks are cheaper and they're automatically backed up in Amazon's cloud. (or you can back them up on your pc). Reading on eink is a pleasure. I would never try using a normal tab for reading an ebook, too much glare for long term reading.

The main thing I like is the fact that if I want a new book I switch my kindle on, browse to something I want, click purchase and 60 seconds later i've got it and am busy reading.

+1 for kindle. I never used to read so many books but the kindle just made it so convenient.

If making notes is important to you then look at the kindle touch or the new paperwhite. If you dont care about notes, then just grab the normal kindle - its cheaper and can still make notes but it's not as easy since you have to type everything using a 5 way button.

Calibre + kindle + google = :D
