The special offer means the "screen saver" is ads. Reading is the same on all.
On the non-special offer ones you get pics of famous writers.
Special offer ones are not available outside the US.
I'd take the special offer one if possible assuming actual savings. Doubt there will be cost savings after shipping though - check incredible connection they sometimes have good prices.
Also...don't get the keyboard one. You want the cheapest one you can get.

I'm in the US so I can get it here without the shipping costs. My issue is that due to the fact that the special offers version is meant to be sold only in the US, will it still work when I take it to SA. I mean will I still be able to Buy books for my Kindle from Amazon using my South African kindle account. (SA billing address and credit card)

speaking of 3g...don't pay extra for that. rather go with wifi. if you don't have ADSL then most smartphones can create a personal hotspot anyway. sure it'll be R2 a meg, but books dont use a lot of data
The amazon support people say it will work. The only "issue" is the adverts won't display properly which is cool.

eh us billing should have better access to books.
might run into trouble if your using a za credit card. try to do the us thing, but dont sweat it if its not possible.

It's definitely worth trying to sign up to the US store. There's barely any difference in the ZA Kindle price & the prices you get at stores but it's enormously lower on the US store. The difference in content is also stark, compared to the US store, the ZA store feels like a corner stall.
It's pretty easy to sign up as being the US, just put in a US billing address. Mine is still the HQ of one of my previous employers. The ZA card works fine.
The only slight hiccup I've had is it once said that I hadn't purchased a book *in* the US for a while, got around that by buying a book while connected to a US proxy (got a free trial, changed the WiFi settings on the device) and it hasn't asked me since. That was well over a year ago.

I was in exactly the same position: I bought a Special Offers Kindle in the US ($69!), and it works an absolute treat here as long as you don't mind that your screensaver will never change. There are no nag screens. Because it is WiFi only, I buy books from my PC and then sideload them onto the Kindle (which is registered to my account with another Kindle). All works just fine.
My father in law is looking at getting the kindle for reading books, I see Takeolot have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch wifi for R1699

Kalahari uses epub, Kindle uses mobi, so you will have to remove DRM, then convert the epub to mobi on your pc using something like calibre. (even with the horrific exchange rates at the mo, it's still cheaper to buy books from amazon than kalahari.)

Just remember if you opt for the Galaxy, that it is a backlit tablet and therefore by definition less easy on the eyes for extended reading than the Kindle's e-ink. Reading a Kindle is like reading a book -- you can do it indefinitely without eye-strain, unlike backlit LCD screens. I know tablet fanboys dispute this, but it is simply a proven medical fact!
