Kindle - worthwhile in SA?

Kobo's are better you can even load them up with downloaded ebooks.

Only reason I have a Kobo is because at the time they were cheaper than getting a Kindle.... but the Kindle can do the same. My first Kindle had many sideloaded books on it.

I would still prefer a Kindle though, they're just ever so slightly better in my opinion. If I could justify it I would get the new Kindle Oasis...

Wife has Kobo, I have kindle paperwhite.

Only thing paperwhite has that kobo does not is the backlight and even that would not be a dealbreaker for me.

I'm also on an earlier gen kindle without the light and I'm happy with it. I do sometimes just want to go lie outside on a summers evening and read when it's dark out :).

My older kindle(s) broke, my paperwhite is replacement #4 from Amazon.
I got 1 a year for 3 years from them then 16 months into my last one it broke and they sent me my current one. About 2 years old now.
Paid for the first one.

Give #4 to saor and claim #5 from insurance .

I have a paperwhite and a bogus US address - I get a US store and a lot of the books I've bought are $2-$10 cheaper than the SA store version.

I've not bought recently for the exchange rate - but the actual dollar value of the books have been a lot lot less

I thought if you registered on Amazon.com it didn't matter where in the world you were? I've always just seen & paid in USD...

I think my Kindle has paid for itself many times over, just with not having to pay SA book prices.

+1 for the Paperwhite, don't go for the Touch, the difference in text quality is so big. I went nutsoid and got the Voyage and it's fantastic. If I have to be honest though, the extra features aren't really worth the price bump (but I still love it.)

My wife has a Kobo touch and it is quite nice. The only problem we have is that it doesn't play nice with Calibre ebook manager

They add on VAT though if you're in South Africa

Overseas customers have to pay Amazon's Whispernet tax which used to be $2.

I have the 4th gen Kindle without backlight which worked perfectly for 5 years until I tripped and fell on it, so not so much anymore...

Replaced it with a latest gen Paperwhite, honestly don't think I could go without the backlight anymore... Even the increased PPI makes quite a difference.

I have the paperwhite for about 2 years now. I think it paid itself off by now. I only read about 2 books a month and I go for the cheaper variety. Used to limit myself to $1, then $5 and now I am currently on $10. Sometimes I bread this habit though if I am looking for something specific.

I normally just go through the recommended for you part on goodreads then choice 1 of the books/series dependant on reviews.

When I compare the price of the books I read on the kindle vs exclusive books etc, I save about R90 per book if it is $10. Can't say that it is the same for all books, but the few that I have checked was in about that range.

And of course the ability to get samples from Amazon is real nice :).

What's the battery life like with the backlight? My Kindle is getting a bit long in the tooth and wondering if the upgrade it worth it.

Still very good. I constantly leave it at about the halfway mark in terms of brightness, which is perfect, without sacrificing too much battery life. Difficult to say as I haven't let it run down from full charge yet, but it still lasts weeks basically.

I'd say the upgrade to the Paperwhite is worth it, for the backlight and increased PPI, but not the premium they ask for the Voyage or Oasis.

Yea, my backlight is usually around 10-11

My battery lasts easily 2 weeks with daily use of around 2 to 4 hours per say. I do charge it regularly though, I have 3 chargers next to my bed, usually only use one at a time but every now and then I tend to top everything up (items I use daily as well as items that just sit in the cupboard most of their lives).
