Kindle

I was just thinking, I have quite a few pdf books on the computer. Will I be able to read them on the kindle properly? Will I have to 'pan' the screen from left to right for every sentence or will it automatically squeeze the text or cut off sentences depending on the size of the text that I want?

And if I won't be able to read it properly, is it possible to convert them to another format without losing the formatting?

Thanks again

There's a great program called Calibre. Used for library management, as well as converting. Converting pdf's can be tricky, but with a bit of practice and googling you'll get the hang of it.

I ordered one in Dec , took 4 weeks to arrive. The cover+light took 1 week to arrive ... very odd ?
Works like a dream. Download free books , user Calibre to convert to Kindle format , mail the file to your "Kindle - Amazon" email address and Amazon send the file within seconds back to you via wireless.

You can convert nearly everything using Calibre.

Cool thanks. The kindle is looking better and better the more research I do :)

PCDirect had stock on the Kindle last week R2400 or so for the 6" 3G

Got a new one in January. Four days from online order until delivery (happened much quicker than the time I was given as their estimate). Make sure you buy a leather cover for it; a must have addition.

I'm almost sure its affiliated, or works for PCDirect...

and that price is just ridiculous.

I order 2 Kindles about 2 weeks ago, R1400 for each (no covers) including delivery and customs charges which means PCDirect is TRYING to make R1000 on each Kindle it sells.

Was this for the 3G or the Wifi one? I am looking to buy a 3G one, I see NGR Computers are selling them for R1999.00, and the wifi for R1599.00 : www.ngrcomputers.co.za

Where did you find it for R1400.00?

I can't understand why anyone would want to by one from anywhere other than Amazon.

I know people who don't have credit cards - for them online shopping is a bit of a pain. Also, some people want to physically see/touch a thing before they buy it. Personally, I won't recommend anyone to buy a kindle from anywhere else than amazon.

They are going to have a problem, then, when it comes to buying books for it. :) Unless they only want to read non-copyright books.

Why only from Amazon?
Is it only price - or are there other reasons to buy from Amazon?

If Amazon.com gives you grief about delivery in SA , go to Amazon.co.uk. Order placed through the UK site does not give any problems. Also , if they don't accept your P.O Box address , have it delivered to your office's physical address. Anybody can sign for it , not you specifically.

Whoa!

Why are these books so expensive?!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref...=murder&ie=UTF8&qid=1297318071&rnid=157325011

The Psychopathology of Serial Murder: A Theory of Violence by Stephen J. Giannangelo (Kindle Edition - Nov. 30, 1996) - Kindle eBook
Buy: $91.60

Sexual Murder by Louis B. Schlesinger (Kindle Edition - Mar. 30, 2007) - Kindle eBook
Buy: $73.96

The Psychology of Lust Murder: Paraphilia, Sexual Killing, and Serial Homicide by Catherine Purcell and Bruce A. Arrigo (Kindle Edition - Apr. 24, 2006) - Kindle eBook

Paying that for an ebook is insane :/

It's their own product so it makes perfect sense to buy direct from the source rather than through a third party, all they are doing is adding on a markup.

Warranty and support is covered from Amazon, so if you have issues they will shunt you back there anyway. You also need to register your Kindle on Amazon for warranty purposes and to buy books, so why not make the original purchase there. The online purchase is painless and it gets delivered quickly to your door with DHL. Most likely you will buy your books from Amazon as it is so easy, and then you already have your online profile set up when you purchased it.

There is no grief if you order from Amazon.com if you order the Kindle on it's own, without other goodies, as the Kindle id the only electronics item they ship to here.
