I was interested in getting a Kindle but I was wondering if anyone knows if Amazon's ebooks are available for purchase in SA or do you have to buy locally?

no. You buy the books off Amazon. Unless you want to load your own books. Then you convert them to a .mobi format and copy them on. Simple as that.

As Madman said - you buy from Amazon. Very easy. Dirt cheap.

Incredible connection advertised them a while back but now said they won't be selling them. I read on amazon.co.uk that countries outside of europe need to buy from amazon.com Won't there be a problem with the power connection since they don't use the same as SA?

The power connector is different, but it also comes with usb cable that can be used to charge it. I just use the usb cable.

You buy books from amazon, but some books aren't available for us due to copyright issues.

Even in SA?

You just need a converter or a powered usb port to charge the unit.

Yes, if you get the 3g unit you have basic free internet access. Its not great tho. I've tried reading myBB a couple of times but its slow and the browser on the unit is very limited.

I have ordered 2 from Amazon directly. Its easy and simple. And usually arrives in a week.

Thank you very much for all the info. I think I'm gonna order one too.

thanks all , for the info , was wanting to know this as well ..:)

I charge my Kindle with a mini usb charger either directly from a PC or using my cellphone [blackberry] charger . Basically any mini-usb charger will do.

As for ordering , Amazon.com is way better than Amazon.co.uk , it's faster , easier and they work out all the taxes/import duties in advance [so you don't pay anything when it arrives] .

Waaaaah they say shipping will take 7-9 weeks! So no ordering before xmas because we going away. *sniff*

That's weird because I just ordered my Kindle two weeks ago and it arrived within 5 days. I guess everyone suddenly wants a Kindle.

I think you picked something wrong. They ship it in like 5 days, are you using the Express shipping or did you select some other shipping option? It is in stock and all on Amazon.COM [don't use Amazon.CO.UK !]

When you try and process the order they change the kindle you order to the international version and what one takes 7-9 weeks. If you add the regular 3G kindle it says ships in 5 days but then it also says during the processing that that one isn't available for purchase outside of us.

All you need is an adaptor that fits the US-type plug on the "power supply". Cost me around R30 from Mica (and has sockets for a whole lot of other plug types too).

Just tried to buy another Kindle to see if I get the same problem and it looks like the holiday seasons is taking its toll on supplies after all (my theory anyway) as I also get the you will be getting this in January message.

There has been a huge demand for Kindles since the Kindle 3 was announced. I know quite a few of the MyBB members had to wait for delivery of their K3s, but once it gets to dispatch, it normally gets to you within 5 days.
