My beloved Kindle was pickpocketed outside Menlo Park Post Office last week. It was a Christmas gift from my husband, he bought it overseas.
I need to start looking for a replacement and would appreciate some advice

Recommended model? I had a paperwhite, which I loved. I see now there are ones with wifi PLUS 3G. What does that mean and what are the benefits?
What is the Voyage Kindle? How does it differ from paperwhite?
Where can I get the best deal?
If I purchase it from Amazon, do I have to pay extra customs duties?
If I order from Amazon, how long does it take to reach me?

Many thanks.

- Paperwhite - don't bother with the 3G if you have internet at home
- Voyage - latest, greatest most expensive, - For that extra money you get a glass, anti-reflective screen, higher contrast, an adaptive front light, smaller form and PagePress smart page turning. The two are matched on resolution, battery life and storage.
- Probably Amazon (even with shipping and customs)
- Yes (but see above)
- Took 5 days when I bought mine 4 years ago

Edit: sorry for your loss - mine was nicked at the airport a couple of years ago so I know the feeling

The new paperwhite has improved resolution etc.

GSM is only necessary if (a) you don't have Wi-Fi at home or (b) you travel, and may want to download a book when there is no Wi-Fi connection. NB: No SIM required and there is no charge for the download.

I agree with AfricanTech: purchase direct from Amazon.

Also, don't forget that a lot of phones can make wifi hotspots, so GSM is never really necessary.

If stolen, there doesn't seem to be much they can do with it aside from selling it on? I can't imagine the average pickpocket would read my books. I in any case deregistered it. Is there any way I can remotely make it useless to use?

I dunno, maybe that thief would love your Mills&Boon collection.

I had a look at the Voyage when I was in the states last and decided on paperwhite Wifi... not much difference. Also as mentioned by other go with Amazon directly their pricing is great and also support is much better if you purchased directly. Make sure to remove the stolen one from your AWS account ASAP otherwise someone can purchase on your account.

You can remove it on you Amazon account and wipe it... AFAIK

I would get the newest Paperwhite.

Amazon works out/estimates the custom duties. They paid me a bit back after delivery. Ordered the Thursday, received it the Tuesday. I was quite impressed.

I love my paperwhite but I'm battling to get a decent cover/case for it. Any suggestions that wil not cost an arm and a leg.

Looking at getting one myself - this damn exchange rate is making it an expensive prospect though
