I have the Paperwhite, currently best value for money in the Kindle range, and the sidelit screen is very very very useful.

Don't worry about ePubs, Calibre can convert just about anything to a Kindle readable format (i.e. .mobi)

Order directly from Amazon, usually cheaper, but check if Incredible Connection or Takealot have specials.

*edit*
New Kindle Paperwhite (which has higher resolution) will be ~$191 from Amazon, which will be about R2,350 compared to the paperwhite from Takealot which is R2,399 for the 2014 model. I would definitely go with the Amazon version.

I have the Kindle keyboard with 3G. Bought it way back in 2010/2011. After all these years it is still going strong and I am a heavy user.

Back then I paid about $189 + ~R250 customs to ship it directly from Amazon.

That thing has paid for itself multiple times over.

And get Calibre. It's great for organising your ebooks and converting epub to mobi. Project Guthenburg has loads of free e-books.

I have the cheapest kindle with ads included and it does exactly what you need it to. There is really no need for any of the advanced models

Ditto on caliber though...it's free and converts anything to mobi which kindle can handle

So I've never had a Kindle before, but an considering getting one now.

There are so many different options that range from R1679 to over R3000.

Which one to get?

I just want to be able to read ebooks with an e-Ink screen:

I was looking at:
http://www.takealot.com/kindle-touch-wifi-2014/PLID32851374

But I see it doesn't do ePub. Is that an issue?

This.

I've owned 3 Kindles - currently using a Paperwhite (older version) - it's your best bet - the other two are still being used by other family members

Also +1 on buying direct from Amazon (all three of mine were)

I upgraded the wife to the Paperwhite last year and its great from the normal Kindle. Also get the leather cover, pricey but it really makes a difference.

I've got a Kobo Glo and also enjoy it buy will upgrade to paperwhite in the future.

As for buying direct, well I bought locally for nearly the price of it imported. Worth shopping around locally.

+100 for calibre awsome tool. I have never bothered wth a branded kindle. I started off with a cheap tab and installed the kindle.apk. works just as well and then you have the advantage of using it for other stuff.

Reading on a tablet is completely different from reading on an e-reader. Try the kindle. Your eyes will love you

Not. A kindle is way better for reading. Try a Kindle for a week and you will understand.

Also bought that Kindle at about the same time as you. Still going strong. Was a breeze buying it directly from Amazon (arrived 2 days earlier than their initial shipping estimates), and at that stage what you could get locally was considerably more expensive, dunno if it's changed since.

Calibre is a must, never had an issue with books it has converted to Kindle format so far.

This I will agree with 100%. Tried reading on my Kindle and a 10" Tab, Kindle was far superior, the lack of reflection alone gave the Kindle the upper-hand. Mind you, this was on a Tab 1, not sure if the newer generation Tabs are any better.

You won't go wrong with ANY Kindle, imo.

I got the new paperwhite from Amazon last night. all I can say is EPIC!!!! Costs about 2400 depending on the exchange rate. The new paperwhite will only be sold by Takealot maybe at the end of this month. The price on Amazon for the new one is almost the same as the price we are paying for the old one.

As far as I can tell the new Kindle Paperwhite has only a higher res screen and a new font that apparently makes reading easier.

Hope it helps.

I'm definitely going to get one of those when I hit the US. It looks fantastic.

Since I got my Note 10.1, I haven't used my Kindle (which I got soon after Safricans were allowed to buy them). Having the backlighting of the lcd panel makes a huge difference when reading when the SO is sleeping.

I have the second-generation paperwhite, which I ordered directly from Amazon about 18 months ago; saved about R700, everything considered, vs what local resellers charged at the time.

Combined with Calibre to convert formats, it does pretty everything I want from an ereader, except support two-column PDFs (have to use really complicated techniques to convert those properly, but it's usually easier to just give up and read on another device).

Pretty much if it had proper PDF support, it would be absolutely perfect. As it, it's just very nearly perfect. :)

Kindles are awesome, especially if you want to read outdoors.
