Slowly but surely the full story will emerge. World cup or no world cup, at the end of the day the safety of passengers was more important. Not imposing restrictions and ignoring low level cloud could have lead to an accident and then we would really have had the pessimists climbing on the band wagon!

Johannesburg - A computer system, the weather and private jets hogging parking bays were to blame for the chaos at Durban's King Shaka Airport that saw hundreds of soccer fans miss the last World Cup semifinal match, the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) said on Thursday.

The Central Airspace Management Unit system, which controls aircraft movement into and out of airports, failed between 4am and 8am on Wednesday, which resulted in air traffic services allocating slots on a first-come, first-served basis, Acsa spokesperson Solomon Makgale said in a statement.

The system had worked "perfectly" until Wednesday.

"Private operators took advantage of the situation, in certain instances taking up slots which were not allocated to them."

As air traffic picked up later in the day, planes wanting to land around noon were delayed for 20 minutes due to low clouds, which affected visibility.

The consequent increase in traffic volume in the Durban airspace was so high that controllers decided around 2pm to impose airspace restrictions. This meant no Durban-bound aircraft could take off for 30 minutes.

When restrictions were lifted at around 5pm, eight private aircraft operators who had landed failed to follow instructions to leave for airports in the area.

"This made it impossible for other aircraft to fly into the airport as aircraft parking bays were occupied."

As a result, six scheduled flights - from SAA, Kulula and British Airways - were forced to either return to base or head for other airports, preventing about 600 passengers from getting to the Germany-Spain match at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Acsa operations manager Themba Maseko said on a normal day, about 100 aircraft flew into King Shaka airport. On Wednesday, there were about 250.

The pilots of private aircraft, many carrying VIPs, refused to follow set procedure of dropping off their passengers before moving to the old Durban International Airport to park.

"I am not blaming the VIPs. The people who caused the problem were the people flying the aircraft," said Maseko.

He said the pilots had started moving their aircraft when Acsa threatened to take action against them, but by then it was too late.

Acsa managing director Monhla Hlahla apologised to South Africans and fans who had wanted to see the match.

"We regret that this incident has dampened the jubilant mood in the country and stained the impeccable efforts that went into preparing and facilitating air traffic during this prestigious tournament."

Both world soccer body Fifa and the 2010 Organising Committee on Thursday washed their hands of the chaos.

OC chairperson Irvin Khoza said the body was not taking responsibility for the congestion at the airport.

Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke told a press briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg: "I want to make it clear that this problem had nothing to do with Fifa."

Khoza added: "It was not our fault. We are sorry it happened, but we cannot be held responsible for aircraft not landing in Durban." - Sapa

God there you go again with your "pessimists" remark
Bottom line is that ACSA failed !!
Simple as that, it had nothing to do with weather, that just spin from the idiots who are in charge.

No matter what the circumstances, the travelers not able to reach their destination should be refunded. Everything else is just bull****.

Sorry... read something about computer systems, blah, blah, blah....

It's ACSA's fault.... they are in charge of the airport... hence they get left with the dead duck.

And the pessimists win either way... there was a ballsup... not a bad one... nobody died... but it was still a ballsup.

I know you can't live with that Lance... you would rather die than admit... but nobody gives a crap about your hypocritical feelings anymore,

Ha ha apparently you don't give a crap but you took the time (probably over 10 minutes for you) to type that pathetic response. Great to see that you have eventually stepped out the closet and admitted to being a pessimist.

Oh and sorry you battled to read that whole article. It was cut and pasted but in future I will dumb it down for you :)

Amen to that, I can just se it tomorrow, Lancelot will have 100000 threads on how wonderful and successful everything was and how the pessimists lost !! ;)

Yip, you did indeed "lose" marine. First there was no civil war when Tereblanche was killed. First loss. Then hundreds of tourists weren't killed and raped during the world cup. Second loss. I'm sure there are tons more examples but I really could not be bothered reading through all the crap you have spewed out on this forum again, the first time was boring enough.

And yes, you are right. I will be linking to every single story I can find praising South Africa for the next few months. Why not? You pessimists do it with every negative bit of news you can lay your hands on.

Anyone who knows anything about aviation knows that it's ACSA's fault, so pointless blaming anyone else.
Even the gauvamint know it.

Simple folk are often satisfied just having someone to blame but some of us prefer further explanations as to what actually caused the issue.

There's some links to the avcom website, in the other thread if you require an expalanation Lance.

No idea why you are an ACSA defender.

Anybody who knows me... knows who I am... I don't need to use labels... unlike you. Not everybody fits into neat little boxes.

Looks like your thread is FAIL though... everyone knows who was at fault... it doesn't take a degree in aviation engineering.

Yet another pointless SirWhinealot thread.

With the weakness of your previous post I thought it was impossible for a weaker response but you never fail to impress me. You have posted twice in this thread now and on both occasions said very little. So it is ok to post random threads about what you like on toast but it id frowned upon when you share an article about an incident that seemed to interest the public? Or am I at fault here in that I failed to realise that it is only being able to report on perceived failures that is of interest. Explanations as to what caused them are of no interest to pessimists?

Great to see that you decide to resort to name calling. I assume you won't mind if I refer to you as Gayvdh going forward?

Whatever floats your boat Lance... nobody gives a s**t what your latest rant or blog or beef or bullcrap is anymore.
