Kitchen Tools, Gadgets & Essentials

Oh yeah a few more items that I use regularly:

Microplane grater
Old fashioned mortar and pestle
The pasta maker only comes out once every couple of months but I love it
Kenwood mixer is pretty basic but it does the job well and the dough hook is killer

Ok so I thought the window thing was a bit of a gimmick at first but I needed a new toaster and it was on sale on Kalahari so I bought it and it actually works really well. It makes getting your toast exactly how you want it very easy and it also has a bagel setting where you can turn half of it off so it only toasts from one side.

This is also a pretty good French press if you like coffee it's called a Espro. It is double walled so it keeps the coffee hot for a few hours and the micro filter is really good and filters with no residual sludge. It is also really really well made and disassemble and reassembles easily. There is always this satisfying feeling in putting together something that is really well machined.

My Panini maker is by far my most used and needed kitchen appliance. I buy the one that open 180 so both sides can be used separately . I use it for everything from toast to crumpets to bacon and eggs, I have fried burger patties and chicken on it. I make Vetkoek and grill tortilla on it too. I have not been without one in my kitchen for more than 10 years, if one breaks I get another ASAP. Used every day in one way or another. ImageUploadedByMyBroadband1457068720.049819.jpg. This one is not mine but just a visual to show what I am on about.

The Cadac Pizza Stone is 39% off on Takealot. I use it on my gas braai it makes really good pizza.

I saw it on the Takealot app for R139 it is in their daily deals section.

My gas braai is technically not in the kitchen but one of the most used.

Fav kitchen toy is definitely a pressure cooker. Brand name one is <1k on a good day.

Yeah I think pressure cookers are a good thing actually, even though I don't have one myself.
You should get one. Had both a pressure cooker and a slowcooker for a year and then gave the slow-cooker away because I wasn't using it & it uses more electricity per meal anyway (I measured).

I wouldn't touch one of the oldschool stove ones though...those are scary. :o

A friend knows someone whose face was burnt permanently red due to opening a pressure cooker too early.
You can't open the modern ones "too early". Interlocking lid means you're not opening it whilst pressurized no matter how strong you are. Opening the vent should be done cautiously though...superheated steam is dangerous no two ways about it.

Had one of those back in the day. My brother didn't seal it properly so it went boom (as in lid came off with a generous amount of force) on him. :D

He was upset about it, I lolled.

Yeah no...there is a reason those things are used in bomb-making...

A mandolin is very useful just watch the ol fingers they bite!!!!
Very true... but you can use a rubber thimble if you wanna stay safe.

I am not too fond of loads of gadgets. They need to be stored somewhere and have to be washed up. My view is that with decent knife skills you dont need all the gadgets.

Will you lot shut up about all the toys for a kitchen ffs...

I'm already bleeding enough money doing a new kitchen at home.
