He's chosen some components, and then went to pricecheck.co.za to get cheapest prices for all(I know it's not always up-to-date though).

this is what he's got so far

Graphics Card - GeForce 9800 GTX+ ~R 2700
OR GeForce 9800 GTX for ~ R 2000
CPU - Core 2 Quad Q6600 ~R 2570
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 640 GB ~ R1105 (could go down to 500 gig)
Ram - DDR2 4 GB ~ R 905
Mother Board - GIGABYTE EP45-UD3R ~R 2175

'n Power Supply~R600

DVD WR LG 22x DVD-Writer - Lightscribe (IDE) R350.00
plus keyboard and mouse ~R200

he has a budget of ~R10k(bursary stuff) and already has a screen and operating system from previous pc's

He wants to buy in CPT/Stellenbosch areas but will consider good online stores.

Any help/comments would be appreciated

Looks pretty decent to me. Might work out a bit over budget if buying from a decent store, but then you can just go for the cheaper options like that 500gb hardrive :)

Is it just me or don't I see a case mentioned? Also I would look at a better mouse, 500GB hardrive?

Stay away from Faithless computer in Stb, the do shoddy work and are expensive. They stole a cold cathode tube out a laptop that was sent for a quote on a screen replacement ...

We (in S/West) buy most of our stuff from Computer Mania at Somerset Mall and on take2

Graphics Card - GeForce 9800 GTX+ ~R 2700
OR GeForce 9800 GTX for ~ R 2000

ATI 4850 HIS ICEQ 4 - R2584,38
http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/digital-4850-iceq-512mb-radeon-4850-p-2275.html

CPU - Core 2 Quad Q6600 ~R 2570

Q6600 - R2337
http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/intel-core2-quadro-q6600-quad-core-24ghz-p-327.html

But if he's not doing rendering, graphic work stuff etc. there is absolutely no point ( bar 2 or 3 games, which in any case will be limited by the GPU anyway) in getting a quad. Especially if he's not planning on overclocking, as it runs stock at 2.4GHz.
In that case I would suggest:

E8400 - R2167,14 (stock 3.0GHz)
http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/intel-core2-e8400-dual-core-p-670.html

HDD - Seagate Barracuda 640 GB ~ R1105 (could go down to 500 gig, 320GB even, even then I highly doubt all the space will be utilised)

500GB will suffice, unless he plans on collecting masses of data, could save some cash.

Ram - DDR2 4 GB ~ R 905
Mother Board - GIGABYTE EP45-UD3R ~R 2175

Get a cheaper model, or something like Asus p5Q, and spend more money on a decent PSU!! Quality 450-500W, I recommend the Corsair HX520W or the non modular versions, or Coolermaster..etc.

'n Power Supply~R600

DVD WR LG 22x DVD-Writer - Lightscribe (IDE) R350.00
plus keyboard and mouse ~R200

he has a budget of ~R10k(bursary stuff) and already has a screen and operating system from previous pc's

Id just change the gfx card to ATI... maybe a HD4850... but that's just my opinion... I think the HIS HD4850 Turbo is about R2700...

That Turbo version is merely an added 25MHz on the core, nothing on the memory, which does buggerall for performance. Waste of money for something you can do yourself, ie concentrate on the memory.

If you get a 4850, any one with a stock after market cooler will be awesome but dont pay more than 2500 cause then you haven't done enough shopping around, prophecy will be adding the HIS digital range soon keep your eye out for their prices, im sure they will try beat landmarkpc. And the 1Gig versions only take advantage on screens bigger than 22"

I know, I am just sharing this info with him before he goes and buys the seagate and starts a thread about it failing him. :p

On the segates (as an ex die hard fan), not a good hard drive to go for. We have lost a couple on our production servers lately and many have been no more than 15mths old. Lost my faith in them.

We even had our one server lose both its segates drives (320GB) in the last week.

thx guys, some good points so far, keep em coming

Any pointers on DDR2 vs DDR3 RAM?

Any pointers in terms of stores in the CT/ Stellies area?

Also. A good idea to try and buy now or wait until early next year?

He's at home now in the eastern cape so PE stores/ online stores would also come into play
