Lance Klusener, the former South Africa allrounder, has been sacked as Dolphins' coach after his contract was not renewed. He told ESPNcricinfo he was given "no reason," for his dismissal and thought the decision was "very strange."

When contacted on Saturday, Dolphins CEO Pete de Wet said rumours of Klusener's sacking were "not true at all." On Monday morning, de Wet said he would issue a statement "shortly."

Klusener was appointed interim coach at the Dolphins in January 2012, when Graham Ford left the franchise to take over as Sri Lanka's national coach before confirmed in the role later that year.

Under his tenure, Dolphins won one trophy - the 2013-14 T20 competition - and have maintained good form in the shortest format. This season, they lost the final of the Ram Slam to Titans. They have not done as well in other competitions, finishing fifth in the one-day cup with four wins from 10 matches and lie fourth in the fourth in the Sunfoil Series, which is only at its halfway stage, but have only won one match.

Klusener was considered very much part of South Africa's coaching structures and was even roped in as a lower-order batting consultant for the national team ahead of the Boxing Day Test against England.

It has been a shocking season for the Dolphins. It is a pity Klusener was made the scape goat.

So if you have a legal employment contract and the terms state an end date for that contract, you would consider that a sacking?

Klusener taking Dolphins to court

Former Dolphins coach Lance Klusener, who did not have his contract renewed in mid-season, has taken his former employers to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Pete de Wet, chief executive of the Dolphins, received a fax from the CCMA yesterday regarding the non-renewal of the coach’s contract and was notified that an arbitration hearing would be imminent.

De Wet confirmed the Dolphins would announce the next coach in two weeks, which is when the arbitration is expected to take place.

Klusener was given the chop on the eve of the second round of the Sunfoil Series. The official reason given then by De Wet was that it was purely a business decision.

Klusener was surprised at the move in spite of his long service with the franchise, as a player and a coach. The Dolphins completed their season under caretaker coaches Roger Telemachus and Yashin Ebrahim and the matter seemed to be over.

Klusener loses CCMA case v Dolphins

Durban - The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has handed down its finding on former Dolphins head coach Lance Klusener’s referral of an alleged unfair dismissal arising out of the non-renewal of his coaching contract.

The Commissioner tasked with considering Klusener’s claim dismissed it and ruled in favour of the franchise.

The franchise indicated to Klusener in February that it did not plan to renew his contract, and he left his post as coach of the professional team at the end of February, and sought to challenge the non-renewal of his contract at the CCMA.

Following the departure of Klusener the Dolphins franchise was coached by caretaker coaches Yashin Ebrahim and Roger Telemachus until Grant Morgan was announced as the new full-time coach in May.

In the award, the CCMA found that Klusener had failed to discharge the onus of proving a legitimate expectation of renewal of the contract existed at the time of the non-renewal.

Furthermore, and significantly, the Commissioner agreed with the franchise’s view that in modern sport, past glories are meaningless if the team’s performance falls below expectations.

When the team failed to match the expectations of the franchise and for that matter the public and fans, any expectation Klusener may have had of renewal, would have diminished.

“It is relief to have this matter now resolved, and we can focus all our energies on the upcoming season,” said Rajesh Behari, acting CEO of the Dolphins.

“The squad is energised and enthusiastic, and we are encouraged by the pre-season preparations. The conclusion of the CCMA matter involving Lance Klusener now clears the way for everyone at KZN Cricket to commit all our energies into the new season,” said Behari.
