KODI vs PLEX

Hack has a lot of definitions, here is the one I'm referring to:

a piece of computer code providing a quick or inelegant solution to a particular problem.

I guess I better relook all the software we install because nearly all of them had to be hacked by installing a 3rd party database and configuring it.

I have never had to hack any database on any software I use. Especially not on XBMC/KODI

Now you're just trolling. You know exactly what I mean.

There is in no way you cannot call this a hack. When Kodi allows you to do this from within the settings menu without having to install third party applications then we can discuss this again.

Here is the MySQL section on the Kodi wiki.

The section starts with this notice:

NOTICE: This is considered an advanced (complicated) and experimental feature.

Are you using a MySQL DB with your setup (as above)? I don't see a reason why you would have to.

Maybe a bit but you are so fixated on one thing its ridiculous

It is absolutely not a hack, it is a install and configuration.

If you read my previous posts you will notice that it does allow this using UPnP.

Yes because installing and managing a database is for more advanced users but the type of people that setup these environments are often used to installing databases. The kodi configuration is a few lines in a config file to tell it where to find the DB but this is a moot point if you use UPnP.

But anyways I am not concerned with convincing you hopefully whoever wishes to install either plex or kodi will go through the install and features docs and decide for themselves what they are comfortable with and in my opinion they are both great and capable so it comes down to preference.
.

I think we'll just agree to disagree.

If I was a developer of an application that required users to install third-party databases and manually configure configuration files to use a feature, I would most definitely call that a hack! For gods sakes it needs a 7 page wiki.

I've got nothing against Kodi, I think it's great software it simply just isn't as suited as a server/client install as Plex is. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

I prefer Kodi for customisation. With Plex you're stuck with one UI with Kodi you can go with wat your mood is and then there are the plugins.

On that note...

Has anybody(thats using the PLEX for Samsung App on the Smart TV's version: ES6600) been notified of the new version yet, and has updated and tested it yet?

From what i've read so far, it is a very nice looking version upgrade (Version 2) and it looks very nice.

Have you had a look at the different SKINS Plex has to offer for the PLEX Home theater? I think you might not have all the facts on that 1 hey...

Yep, Kodi is very good in that department. Plex allows you to change skins for the PHT app, but there is nowhere near as many options as with Kodi's skinning community.

What runs Yify rips better

Both :p

I see they released a massive updated client, my brother runs the Samsung app I'll ask him to check it out. Roku also just received a brand new prerelease which is awesome as it really needed a facelift.

Does Kodi give you the ability to password protect movies/folders that you don't want the kids to access?

It has profiles so you can create one for adults, children or yours specifically and give it access to certain folders only.

It really did need that Facelift hey, along with a lot more other features it needed, from what i've read so far, its been changed from 540p to 720 now, with a lot more features as well. Cant wait to check it out tonight.

The reason why I prefer Plex is because you can have all your content and the plex app on one PC where my TV is preinstalled with Media Link. Media Link is built with Plex in mind.

I am not aware of any TVs that have XBMC installed.

I do not need a PC with an HDMI cable connected to my TV, I can also access all my content from wherever I am in the world so I am not locked down geographically.

I must admit that the Plex Home Theatre app is a bit iffy at times but I rather use the web interface to locate my movies and series folder and never touch plex on my PC ever again.
