You do realise they are talking about a central media server like Plex? Exactly the opposite of what you have been saying the whole time...
PC with fileshare. It's built into the OS. Kodi access the shares.

Using Kodi / SQL server for central databased management versus Kodi / Plex Media Server

Why I stopped using MySQL with Kodi

1.) Installation time. The Kodi / SQL server requires quite a bit of configuration before you can use it across multiple devices. For example, you need to install MySQL and grant access to Kodi. Then you need to create a custom advancedsettings.xml file pointing to the SQL database and manually copy it to each device that requires access to the database. The advancedsettings.xml file must go into the userdata folder of each Kodi installation and this differs between Windows, Android and Linux etc.

2.) Keeping the database updated. The one solution I found was to keep one instance of Kodi running permanently which updates the SQL server as content is added. However, Kodi is not very good at updating content. For example it often list files that have been renamed or deleted and required manually running the “Clean library” action regularly. With PMS I’ve never had the issue again as it monitors your folders in real time for chances and updates your database correctly.

3.) Power failures. Kodi does not start up automatically on a PC unless you use a special app or configure it to start up with Windows. PMS can run as a service by checking a box.

4.) Configuring SMB shares. If you are playing back content with Kodi from SMB shares you could run into issues if not configured properly. Have seen many people not being able to access SMB shares whether it be password issues etc. With PMS you don’t have to configure SMB shares.

5.) And the biggest failure of all. In a Kodi / SQL server setup all the versions of Kodi have to be the same. This is because each version of Kodi uses a different database to store data. So if your Android based version of Kodi decides to auto update itself and you have another Kodi installation that cannot update, then your setup is instantly broken. Not really an option when your discontinued Android TV box is stuck on an older version of OpenELEC.

Using PMS for central databased management on the other hand involves installing it and forgetting about it. Both the Plex app and Kodi with PlexBMC plugin automatically find the PMS server and require almost no other configuration. Also PMS does not care if you are running multiple different versions of Kodi on your network.

My 2 cents :)

You lost me at SQL.

Closet Plex lover :D

SQL is the one thing that really gets my tottie lam. When I have to query something I just use the mouse, right click, select top 1000 rows. I despise databases. Why write join statements when you can just paste a select and then say where x in (nested query). Repeat that a couple of times and you have SQL server on it's knees just trying to get you one resultset.

But I am going off topic here. You stumbled upon another of my hates so I tend to ramble on then.

I use both on the same old pc.

PC is core 2 duo 3.2Ghz with 6gb ram and 1gb nvidia gpu

Plex is purely for watching via wifi on laptop, phones and tablet. I also use it as a "tv guide" because recently added/recently aired etc are very handy.

Kodi is for watching on the main tv.

We use Plex extensively in our household.

I have a Plex pass, so it's great to load a couple of movies on the iPads when travelling for the kids.

The thing why I love Plex, is that it just works no matter what device we install it on. I have a main Mac Mini Plex server serving 5 iPhones, 2 iPads, 4 Computers, Xbox 360 and PS4. There is no configuration required for new clients, it just picks up the Plex server and you go.

i dont mind using plex, but feckit man, give me another option of a server instead of using my laptop. Jassis, my battery takes a moerse knock :D

I run both PMS and Kodi headless/server as my media servers on 1 PC. For watching I use Kodi which also have PleXBMC addon enabled to access the Plex stuff.

Probably why Kodi plays so nicely with Plex :p

Elan Feingold, one of the founders of Plex, was part of the official XBMC development team for a short while, and Plex Home Theater source code was initially forked from the completely open-source XBMC Media Center software on May 21, 2008; this fork was for a long time used as a front-end media player for Plex's back-end server component.

But you have Kodi on your fancy pants Android Smart TV :D

My TV is not smart. I don't think it is wise to buy a TV with an OS that will probably be outdated in a few years time. My TV is nothing more than 50" LED display. It has a Pi3 connected which is where the "smart" is at.

Just a thought… you could try plugging it in?

I started off using XBMC back in the day when we only had the one tv but as the household started acquiring devices plex made more sense. The machine running it isn't very powerful - 2010 Macbook Air with 2gb of ram and a 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - but it works well enough since the viewing load is also shared with countless streaming services.
