Koeberg Interchange (incoming) in Cape Town was scheduled to be open a week ago if I am not mistaken, but delays pushed back the opening. Tomorrow (2010/06/07) is supposed to be the new opening date. Has anyone come across any information to suggest otherwise?

Koeberg Interchange is a multi-year multi-phase R800 million project. 2010 was simply used to kick the then "ANC province" into gear to get this project going and get the funding in place.

The project is not a 2010 project but flyover 1 was accelerated to perhaps be open by kick-off.

Flyover 2 will open in 2011 with phases following after that. Future phases include a BRT corridor via a roadway over the river.

Phases

Phase 1: 2011, flyover 1 by 2010. We are here now!

* Directional ramps connecting the M5 with the N1
* An extra traffic lane on the N1 south-bound
* Widening the N1 north-bound through Koeberg Interchange to three lane
* Two extra traffic lanes on the N1 north-bound after Koeberg Interchange
* An extra lane on Table Bay Boulevard north-bound
* Relocating existing services and modifying existing structures, and minor realignments
* Rehabilitation of both carriageways

Phase 2: Dependent on IRT Phase on the N1

Implementing the N1 BRT Busway Scheme, which will use the area of the disused Paardeneiland railway line

Phase 3

* Widening the south-bound carriageway of the N1 through the Koeberg Interchange from two to three lanes
* Building an extra traffic lane on the south-bound carriageway of Table Bay Boulevard between Koeberg Interchange and Marine Drive Interchange
* Building of a walkway deck and pedestrian paths
* Widening of the bridge carrying Table Bay Boulevard over the disused Paardeneiland railway line

I realize the project is far from completed. It's just that I've been listening to the engineers on the radio promising that the incoming flyover would be finished soon. Last week they said that it will open on the 7th June. I drive by it every day and wouldn't mind missing out on a bit of traffic in the mornings ;) It looks fairly complete :p

Should be 10 o'clock this morning, as just heard on Cape Talk

What I just notices is that two lanes go up the ramp but only one comes down. Either the one funnels you into the Black River or the lanes merge on the bridge. Won't this just be another congestion point?

Sounds like another DA stuffup to me. Im amazed that no one on here is complaing about the R1billion the DA wasted "upgrading" Hospital Bend. Its a disaster and traffic is worse.

Now I await the DA groupies to blame the ANC

DA Stuffup?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Hospital bend upgrade only cost R235m.. not the ridiculous R1bn you claim... as for the traffic being worse, most people I know in CPT are quite happy with the upgrade to Hospital bend.

Ignorance. Shame

You do know of course that this project was put to tender by the ANC while it ran the province.

What is a stuff up, you knob, is the ANC cancelling a much needed hospital in Mitchell's Plain due to lack of funds, which has now been revived by the DA with the funds the ANC could not find.

Cape roads get a facelift
Aletta Gardner | 56 Minutes Ago

The Western Cape Transport and Public Works Department is celebrating the completion of all its planned road improvement projects in time for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

MEC Robin Carlisle has officially opened the final project, a new ramp connecting the N1 highway into Cape Town and the M5.

The MEC and councillor Elizabeth Thompson presented each of the first 20 drivers to use the ramp with a bottle of sparkling wine.

The project is the last of several road improvements which have been successfully completed ahead of the start of the tournament.

.

They are definitely going to need that when sitting in a traffic jam again just past the ramp, because they are going to get very thirsty indeed.
Wait a minute. WTF. is Lizze Thompson bribing the electorate?
Who paid for the alcoholic beverage? I thought booze and cars don't mix?

I wondered about that when I came over there today. It is quite likely less of a problem than the old road, but I've noticed that Capetonians really struggle with the whole traffic merging manoeuvre, even when they have long on-ramps that should allow them to find a gap and match their speed, so they could easily smoothly merge into the traffic.

It is an improvement for that section of road, but not putting up barriers to prevent someone who has taken the wrong ramp from trying to cross mutliple lanes when they come down the hill is an oversight. The improvements to Hospital bend also do nothing to alleviate the major choke points along the M3 like traffic lights and bad on-ramps or the ridiculous M5 to N2 interchange. Hopefully there are plans to fix that as well.

I'm guessing (not that I live in CT), that one has to look at the upgrades to the major roads as a whole, rather than just at one upgrade to see the effect.... I know its been like that in Durbs... one upgrade did very little, but when another 2 opened up the change was remarkable.

Lots of cars cause congestion. Building more lanes and more roads will never be the solution, but CT has a few bottlenecks which are being worked on to allow better flow/safety but not to cure congestion caused by 1 person to 1 car.
