Some people in Kraaifontein (me included) are in the process of setting up our own WUG. We are still confirming line of sight for all the locations, and so far the results look good.

Initially 3 houses will be connected, one of which is located on a hilly thing. Our aim is to redirect our signal into Durbanville and eventually connect the whole Bellville, Kuilsriver, Durbanville, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein. We have awesome elevated points to pitch our antennas on so we should be able to.

If there are any interested parties, please post here or drop me a PM with your personal details (phone num, home address) so that we can look you up on our mapping software and determine the distances between us.

Things will be up and going by 1st of July 2005.

Connection

We currently have the following suburbs connected : Tableview, Blouberg, Parklands,ect..the whole City Bowl, Constantia, Gordons Bay, Strand, Somerset West, Helderberg, Paarl, Belville, Kraaifontein, Durbanville, Kuilsriver.

In any case, how many people are we looking at? Here in Kraaifontein we have about 4 or so who will be connected at startup, with quite a bit of interested parties. Then if possible we would like to get connected to Stellenbosch, cause what i here people are going nuts there. Would this be possible? We would also like to bring brackenfell into this. Not that far from us.

Geez, as soon as we (as in the 4 of us in Kraaifontein) are able to target Kannonkop we must contact you about connecting to this huge network of yours. And how did you connect Paarl?
 
he mentions something about renting these high sites, but that defeats the whole purpose of a wireless mesh being free.

If these high sites are free, then I will DEFINATELY be needing the GPS of these towers. Oh, and would it be possible to have a sticky here to remind EVERYBODY to register their nodes on nodedb? I am quite sure that there are a poopload not on there. If your friend is unable to register his node, register it for him.
 
i am sitting in table view and would be very interested in joining any kind of mesh, i have my AP up and running and only one person connected to it.
 
Yeah we are using Uniterms high sites we pay R400 per month for use of their whole wireless infrastructure and there isnt many places they arent covering
 
Well, that defeats the whole purpose of having a free network. And who is we?

Does this mean that every single person who uses their network must pay R400 per month? Dogdammit, thats worse than Telkom!
 
Kraaifontein area as part of CTWUG came quite a long way since 2005.

We have just over 90 active users and are one of the most active areas of CTWUG.

Some of the most popular wug services are hosted in Kraaifontein (gaming and other).

Blik***. This brings back memories :D

I have since moved 8 times. I'm not part of a WUG now, but my old gear was recycled and is probably still running today.
