Krav Maga

Yeah, the idea of aikido is pretty cool, and it works exceptionally well under certain circumstances..
but i bet the kid kind of dictated the scenario's...if you attacked him in a different way, they struggle a bit, or try jostle for a position they are comfortable with.....
Its my problem with these "form" type based martial arts...although, aikido does have some very good physics ideas, its still based, and practiced under scenarios..

Thats just what i find, and i could be wrong, i am far from an expert...
One of the biggest obstacles in self defense is getting used to the idea you can get hit without dying, and getting used to being hit...if you lose that fear, you are much more likely to thump the other guy

Yea, it felt very scripted. he wanted to do do things in a certain way. But I'm not lightweight and he man handled me as if I weighed 2 kg's :D That is why I asked. It was as if the harder I tried the easier it was for him to man handle me :o. Seems to work wonderfull, but does it work in a real life scenario though? He directed me as to what to do so I figured if something was to suprize him he'll prob faint ....

yeah, he is using ur momentum/strength against you (if that makes sense), but i agree, if you surprise attack him, he will prob have a very hard time adjusting to it (as long as you avoid any of the many many locks :) )
I would def say a KM practitioner of 2 years will most likely walk all over someone who has done aikido for the same time...

Way too much brute force required - requires you to be stronger than your attacker a lot of the time. I don't see much point, but then again I like my traditional chinese kung fu and a bit of BJJ thrown in.

We had a couple of KM instructors come to a BJJ class and they were told that they could fight however they felt like against our BJJ instructors. There is not much KM can do for you when you are tied up in a little ball on the floor and any move you make will result in bones snapping. MK is a great style but like you, I will stick to BJJ. It's not just the style, it's the lifestyle...

My friend, Jacques (Previous Renzo Gracie BJJ intructor), and a black belt from Brazil, Kadu (Gracie Barra), have started a Gracie Barra school in Camps Bay. Jacques is easily the best person to speak to in the province, if not the country, if you want any information about BJJ. He will send you in the right direction. PM me and if you want his contact details.

If you're in the Jhb/Randburg area, Warrior Sports Randburg offer KM/Tuk kong Musool classes, Monday , Wednesday 20:00-21:00 & Saturdays 08:00-10:00. They have an "open" class the first Monday of every month if you want to try it out and see what it really is.

I've been doing Muaythai and Kickboxing with them for the passed year which has been awesome, but I did my first KM class last night and I have to say it was pretty eye-opening. It's important to understand what the objectives are in KM, though - a lot of the arguments in this forum seem to indicate a lack of understanding of these objectives. There is no ultimate fighting discipline or all the others wouldn't exist still!

Essentially, I'm a very non-aggressive person and I avoid confrontation like the plague, but I need to know that if I was put in a "him or me" situation, I could swing it in my favour. Essentially that's what I understand the primary objective of KM to be.

Warriors Sports Randburg: Krav Maga / Tuk kong Musool

Cheers,
James

My understanding of Krav Maga was basically do anything as quickly as possible to eliminate the threat even if it means running away or ripping his eyes out or throwing a table at him :D

You wouldn't be wrong Jonny Two Shoes! Although I prefer to look at it as, if some steroid-overdosed chop decides that beating people half his size to a pulp makes him a man, theres some chance I can prevent it being me...

Authentic krav maga is pretty good, but i dont like the approach it takes...
(it seems very aggressive...)
the gun work also seemed very ambitious to me, knife work was average, h-h was pretty good.

I had a choice of doing this or systema, went to each of the classes...chose systema...
no regrets so far

Are there any Systema classes in Cape Town? Golani recently opened a studio in Cape Town for Krav Maga, which I'm probably going to start going to next week, but I've never done any fighting or martial art, and want to get exposed to just a little bit more. If I can't find Systema classes, I might just join a Muay Thai gym as well.

Been doing it for 3 months - do it more from a fitness point of view - but enjoy it nonetheless. I have never done any kind of self defence or martial arts training before so I don't have much to compare it with. Seems very effective to me though.
