How Krejcir’s nemesis foiled escape plot

Johannesburg - Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir was apparently planning to use the firearm found in his cell to shoot police officers escorting him to court in order to escape from prison.

Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan said he received information while he was out of the country about Krejcir’s alleged plot. He immediately alerted police.

“I warned them that the escape was planned for next week or upon his (Krejcir’s) next visit out of the prison at Zonderwater. I gave the ‘probability’ of an attempt as greater than 95 percent,” O’Sullivan told The Star on Sunday.

On Sunday, Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela confirmed they had foiled an escape plan on Saturday by Zonderwater Correctional Centre inmates that included Krecjir.

“A number of illegal items were discovered and confiscated in different cells,” he said.

“The illegal items included cellphones and chargers, a knife, stun devices, correctional officials’ uniforms, as well as a firearm and ammunition,” Wolela said.

Krejcir’s nemesis O’Sullivan said Krejcir planned to use the pistol to shoot the cops who escorted him to court.

“This is worse than a movie,” O’Sullivan said, also alleging that there were certain officials who had been helping Krejcir with the escape plan.

He, however, could not release the names as it could jeopardise investigations.

Wolela said an internal and external investigation had been launched by the Department of Correctional Services and the SAPS.

National police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as conspiracy to escape from prison had been opened.

Experts to comb Krejcir's cell after escape bid

Johannesburg - Forensic experts will comb Radovan Krejcir's cell at Zonderwater prison on Monday, after the Czech fugitive's fourth alleged escape attempt.

"We knew that he had means of communicating, but we were always struggling to figure out how," national police spokesperson Solomon Makgale said.

"We have confiscated a number of cellphones before, now we figured out where he was hiding the cellphones."

Krejcir was moved and spent his second night in a new cell.

Makgale said every time warders raided Krejcir's cell they found cellphones.

"Then we would think 'now we have all of them'. Meanwhile there were others."

On Sunday, the Department of Correctional Services said Krejcir was allegedly planning a prison break.

The gun that was found was taken for ballistic testing and the four cellphones were being analysed.

Unsuccessful attempts

However, Makgale said police and correctional services have always been "on top of the game" and kept Krejcir behind bars.

"We knew when there were men sent from the Czech Republic last year who were going to try and kill the investigators and get him out of the country.

"He tried to insist on going to see a particular dentist at a specific time and he's tried to bribe the team that escorts him and he hasn't been successful," Makgale said.

Makgale denied claims made by forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan that he tipped police off about Krejcir's escape plan.

According to Eyewitness News, O'Sullivan contacted police after learning that Krejcir was planning to kill him once he was out of jail.

"We’re not working with Paul. We have never worked with him," Makgale said.

"In fact, the only time the investigating officer met him was when we saved his life. We picked up that they were planning to kill him."

Krejcir, who had been charged with a number of crimes, had been behind bars since November 2012.

Earlier this month, the first conviction against him was obtained. He was found guilty of attempted murder and kidnapping of Bheki Lukhele, and dealing in drugs. Lukhele was kidnapped and tortured after his brother allegedly disappeared with 25kg of tik he had been recruited to smuggle through OR Tambo International Airport, where he worked for a cargo company.

On October 16, Krejcir was expected to hear whether he would be granted bail in a case in which he and four others were charged with the murder of drug trafficker Sam Issa. He was shot dead at an intersection in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, in October 2013.

On the same day the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court was expected to hear another case against Krejcir and several others. This involved the murder last year of debt collector Phumlani Ncube, and the attempted murders of Colonel Nkosana Ximba and investigator Paul O’Sullivan. Both of them had been investigating Krejcir.

I imagine the scene at the Palm Ridge court going something like this: "Yes, your honor, I'll be representing Mr Krejcir in defense of this murder charge. What? No, sorry, Mr Krejcir can't be here in person as he's required to appear at a bail hearing in another court on another murder charge. No you honor, not the same as this murder charge. No, also not the same as the conviction obtained against Mr Krejcir. In point of fact, that conviction was only for an ATTEMPTED murder."
Meanwhile at the bail hearing: "Flight risk your honor? One could hardly consider Mr Krejcir a flight risk... I mean, how far could he possibly get with only one firearm, a few extra rounds and a hit squad backing him up. Seriously your honor, this is the real world, not a bad action movie."
 
This guy should be in solitary confinement for 23.5 hours a day. He's too powerful to be kept among the general populace. All his interactions should be monitored.
 
To be fair, the first priority of any prisoner is to escape. You have to give him some credit for trying.

They should probably just move him to C-Max as well. He probably has officials at the current centre he's based on his payroll. I'm rather surprised he hasn't fled - I suppose he will eventually flee depending on how the case against him goes.
