KTM vs BMW

Hmmm I cant really give an accurate comparison between the two brands, but I will say this... The KTM's perform waaaay better on raw HP figures, but all my DP buddies on KTM's permanently complain about their bikes broken down or stuck at dealers due to electrical failures.... Then again, superbikes are more my kind of thing... I just think BMW have perfected that jurassic boxer motor of theirs after all these years.... Would be interested to hear what the OP decided on :-)

After my KTM 250 EXC I would never buy another off road bike. Brilliant build quality.

I didn't know you had one. Loving my 250 XC-W as well! The ONE thing I loathe about KTM's is that they're notorious for being sold 2nd hand without the sidestand ... and I've been trying forever to get hold of a bracket to mount mine. :( So whenever we go riding, the TM racing, gas gas & yamaha bikes all park around the vehicles - and the 2 KTM's are parked against the "ktm tree".

Edit: If you buy a used KTM in good nick you could potentially sell it for more a few years down the road. I sold two of my KTMs for more than I paid for them, dunno if it was luck but they definitely hold their value better than jap bikes.

My neighbour has the 1200 GS and my mate has the KTM990...the BMW is nice, but it looks too flashy for bush riding. I'd rather get the 650 dakar or so if you're going to be going off road.

The guys all reckon the KTM is a 40/60 road/bush type of bike whereas the BMW is a 60/40 type ... and the KLR being somewhere around 55/45 or so.

If I could, I'd get myself a 650gs or dakar, I'm simply too short for the 990, as awesome as it is.

I got my KTM 250 XC-W with kit from a guy for a steal of a price and will be able to sell it for much more than I bought it. Even on gumtree, the KTM's never stay advertised for long.

Lol, I had two, one on the bike and a spare one I got for free from someone. Back in the days the sidestand bolts were notorious for just searing off while the bike was on the stand and the next moment your bike would be lying flat on it's side :D Sorted that problem out by importing a few high tensile stainless steel bolts from a place in the USA. KTM did sort the issue out on later models though.

Why don't you give Alf's shop a call and ask if they have any used sidestands for sale?

That new KTM Freeride 350 coming out in July look like the dogs nads. Only thing is I don't like 4 strokes.

Yeah, loving my 2-stroke. Easy & cheap to fix ... less to break.

Dude, I've queried shops all over for that damn bracket. It's for the 2006 KTM 250 XC-W frame specifically. From 2007 onwards it's a different type I'm told.

I have the actual stand - all I need is the bracket. I've even sent the datasheets for it to our local KTM distributor and even he is battling to get hold of a part for me. Overseas the guys are also struggling - and a generic stand costs around R1200 - and I'm not even sure if it'll fit properly on my bike. :/

If it's just a bracket, can't you take the dimensions/drawings of it to a machine shop and have them knock one up for you?

Unfortunately I don't have the dimensions - and it's curved to allow for flanging of the actual stand to allow the bike to lean over. My bro has laser welders / pipe benders etc at work and my dad's garage is where McGyver did his internship so I'm still trying to get the right looking/sized bracket measurements out to them to see what we can fashion.

That - and trying to build myself a pipe cage. I fell in a river crossing last weekend and the brake pedal knocked a pin hole into the clutch casing cover - very silly design. Sorted that out, neutered the brake pedal's sharp edges & stuck a Hyde guard on the clutch cover. I need to fall less.

Voicy I'll make some calls for you on Monday. If you can point me to the part# on a frame diagram for now it would help.

thanks buddy, I really appreciate the gesture.

Here is the full breakdown of it:

I have the actual stand & I'm ideally looking for items 22,26,30 on the parts list in that link.

The going rates seem to be roughly R300-350 for the bracket, R28 for the spring and then sundries.

Amazon is great for not being able to send to SA, however there are guys in the US who will send it to you if you contact them direct ( just look at who's selling the item and phone them) or look further in the pages of your search and you might find the same item for sale under a slightly different name and they will send it to you then.

OP, what did you end up getting?

I have just got the money to buy my bike so I have had sometime to contemplate what to get. I have test ridden all the bike to consider and I really love the KTM 990, although I'm worried about the advanceness of it and that I might kill myself doing something stupid on it ( damn that thing is fast ) so the BM1200 is looking like an good idea but its HEAVY and pricey, the BMW 800 though I never thought I'd consider looks like a really great bike. It has a low CG and great off-road and still powerful enough. Really I'm going to see what's out there in the next few weeks and I will buy what ever is the best deal.

I have, my concerns are that they don't seem the sort of off road kinda bike the KTM or BMW are and the look is a little off putting, lastly they are very rare to find

The looks are obviously dependant on your own personal taste but I think the offroad capabilities are on a par with both the KTM and BMW. Read a very thorough review of the 800 Tiger recently.
