Kubuntu vs Ubuntu?

What is the major diffs between Kubuntu and Ubuntu - is Ubuntu better with regard to support for drivers etc or are they basically the same just the Gnome/KDE interface?

Which is the better one to run with if you are not used to the OS. i am having probs installing Ubuntu and thought I would try Kubuntu.

They are the same distro. Only difference is the enviroment or interface as u call it, one uses Gnome and the other KDE.

What problems are u having installing Ubuntu? Maybe try getting help @ www.ubuntuforums.org .

They are basically the same, the main difference is obviously KDE/Gnome... (And as a result, the included applications will differ too)

If you are not used to the OS (and are coming from a Windows background) I would say Kubuntu is the easier one to get into! (My opinion)

There is a third option: Xubuntu to consider also...

They are basically the same, with different faces. If you're used to windows KDE (kubuntu) might be a little more familiar.

What kind of probs you having - if its installation switching from ubuntu to kubuntu probably won't make a difference. If its a case of not knowing your way around an unfamiliar place, switching to KDE might help.

I've just installed kubuntu 7.04. I prefer KDE to Gnome, however, the latest kubuntu doesn't seem to have all of the features that ubuntu 7.04 has. I haven't done much playing around, but already, I've noticed that it doesn't have the propriety drivers feature, that ubuntu does have. I think I'm going to give ubuntu a try, depending on what the cap allows!

As the others have said, same base different desktop environment. If you choose one and then decide you would like to try the other just use apt (or synaptic) to get the meta file for that desktop (ubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop).

Thanks for the replies - I will see if Kubuntu installs - I installed Ubuntu 6.1 and it ran fine in a VM but when I try to install the latest version I get the following:

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

It seems to be a bug as a lot of people have reported it on the ubuntu forums. The suggested workarounds do not work for me - the easier ones like disabling floppy, usb etc.

When it comes to using terminal to change the installation, I am at a loss as I am not familiar to changing install parameters.

Am busy d/loading Kubuntu as I prefer the interface.

Without reading the Ubuntu Forums, I seem to recall that "/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off" is related to the boot sequence / sata enhanced or combined mode which needs to be fiddled with in the bios? I experienced something similiar not so long ago, and ended up not mixing Sata and IDE in the same box, I eventually built a second server...

Kubuntu all the way. Ubuntu ships gnome heavy... rather boring. Kubuntu ships kde heavy... rather leet. To put it in perspective.. Mark runs kubuntu.

Successfully converted my Ubuntu (Gnome) 6.1 installation to Kubuntu (KDE) last night - must say it looks very nice - will check it out further tonight.

Are you running this on MS Virtual PC? I got it installed there and running fine except that I cannot get the mouse to work on the VM

Am running it in MS Virtual PC -yes - my mouse is working but the scroll button does not work. Sound is also not working. I am considering installing it on a separate partition instead of Vista

Did you also install any Virtual PC Additions after you installed Kubunto? If so which Addition did you install?

I am wondering if I need to do that to get mouse support enabled.

Nope, did not install any thing. I loaded the additions ISO but nothing happens - what mouse have you got? USB or PS/2. I'm running a stock MS USB mouse plugged directly into the m/board - running through a USB dock did not want to work.

afaik, it adds support for various drivers under the virtual os e.g. move mouse between virtual desktop and normal desktop without having to release it with the right alt key. Iirc these additions are only for MS OS's and not for Ubuntu. I could be wrong, maybe someone else can answer that.
