UPDATE 29-07-2018
Vumatel has been kept on their toes with installations and calls to schedule these installation since last Monday (23 July)
Please take note that Vumatel has three Installation Companies called Nano Fibre, Synchro Sec and Britelink currently assisting with installations to help speed up the installation process!

UPDATE 16-07-2018
Kuils River NORTH is now Live and reinstated. Scheduling & Installations will start from this week forward!
Another Town Hall meeting will be held at Mikro Primary on 18 July at 19:00. This town Hall meeting will focus on the rollout in the Kuils River SOUTH areas.

UPDATE 07-06-2018
Things are progressing steadily as Vuma has started trenching in the Amandelrug/Rouxville area. The Soneike and surrounding areas are just about complete (currently testing the lines) and will go live within the next 2 weeks! See THIS post for some picture updates.

UPDATE 15-05-2018
The coverage map has been updated/changed back to the google maps overlay, indicating the individual areas being worked on and a general ETA. Area 1 is almost complete now(Soneike as a whole was Area 1 initially, but has been divided into smaller parts... See below)
Trenching has commenced in Areas 2 - 5 and they are working at a great pace with a team of 150 construction workers. See THIS post for pictures and a video update of the main road in which trenching has commenced.

UPDATE 25-04-2018
The Town hall meeting was quite informative. It outlined everything a resident needs to know regarding the project from trenching to home installation. Kick-off day is officially on 2 May, but the trenching will only start on 7 May 2018 in Soneike. Kuils River East has been divided into small parts and trenching will take about a month for each area. This can speed up depending on how quickly the municipality can sign off the trenching done. Currently estimates are end of May completion for areas beginning in Soneike (Northern side of KR) until end of August for the Jagtershof area (Southern side of KR)
Weekly email updates will also be sent out by Vumatel starting May. These updates will inform you about trenching times in your area, currently active areas and other relevant info.

UPDATE 12-04-2018
We are finally registered as 'Build in progress' on the Vumatel map!
You can start placing your pre-orders now:D

UPDATE 30-03-2018
We are now qualified for Fibre! Vumatel are in the works of starting construction here soon.
Stay tuned

UPDATE 26-03-2018
Area 3 is almost at 100%
AREA 1: 113% (0 Sign-ups required)
AREA 2: 23% (341 Sign-ups required)
AREA 3: 98% (9 Sign-ups required)
AREA 4: 107% (0 Sign-ups required)
TOTAL = 26.7% (30% / 234 Sign-ups required)

UPDATE 19-03-2018
Both Area 4 And Area 1 Has reached the required targets and they still keep climbing. I added a total percentage required; as VUMA requires a 30% show of interest out of the total amount of homes in these 4 Areas, to deem it viable to start installing Fibre. Area 2 has also started picking up some speed. Area 3 is now also approaching the last stretch with less than 100 sign-ups required.

AREA 1: 100% (0 Sign-ups required)
AREA 2: 22% (345 Sign-ups required)
AREA 3: 81% (81 Sign-ups required)
AREA 4: 106% (0 Sign-ups required)
TOTAL = 24.6% (30% / 384 Sign-ups required)

UPDATE 12-03-2018
Area 4 (Jagtershof, Silver Oaks and surround) are on the brink of meeting interest levels!!
Values are now also displayed in chart format on top.
AREA 1: 88% (57 Sign-ups required)
AREA 2: 14% (380 Sign-ups required)
AREA 3: 72% (121 Sign-ups required)
AREA 4: 96% (27 Sign-ups required)

UPDATE 24-02-2018
At our current pace, we might reach interest levels in as soon as 2 weeks time, excluding Area 2. The major 'delay' in this area exists because the demographic is of more elderly people. This can still be overcome, provided we focus on awareness programs
AREA 1: 71% (142 Sign-ups required)
AREA 2: 12% (390 Sign-ups required)
AREA 3: 64% (153 Sign-ups required)
AREA 4: 79% (169 Sign-ups required)

UPDATE 17-01-2018
Things are moving along nicely. Kuils River has been split up into 4 Areas since the beginning of this movement, as shown Below.
As of this week the status of these areas are:
AREA 1: 61% (189 Sign-ups required)
AREA 2: 10% (397 Sign-ups required)
AREA 3: 56% (188 Sign-ups required)
AREA 4: 66% (260 Sign-ups required)
All of these areas are doing really well. Most of them are on 60% reaching for 70% and at the current rate, we are adding roughly 10% interest to Area 1, 3 and 4 each week! Area 2 is unfortunately a problem area at the moment, but I am confident that we will also reach the target.

UPDATE 25-01-2018
We've finally made it onto the map! Currently we are in the 'show my interest' phase, but things are moving along swiftly. I have started walking door to door again in my area and telling people to sign up. I encourage you to do the same, to tell your neighbors and family living close by in Kuils River. See THIS VUMATEL MAP to show your interest and current progress :)

UPDATE 14-12-2017
New map created. Although still waiting for the latest data point updates. Check it out on the link above.

UPDATE 07-12-2017
Currently Vumatel is busy installing FTTH in the Brackenfell Area. As a next target area, Vumatel is looking to expand to Kuils River.

Vumatel has also just started with surveying the Soneike area from 5 to 15 December

ABOUT

With more and more devices in our homes becoming internet connected, it is hard sometimes to keep up with bandwidth demand. As you might know, ADSL is the fastest, cheapest and overall best way to connect your home to the internet… or, well it WAS up until 2010. SO here we are almost a decade later and still living in the stone ages.
BUT, there is a solution. Instead of ranting on for hours, you (yes YOU) have the power to change all of this, from the comfort of your own home :D

In 2015 I started walking around Amandelrug, Rouxville and some parts of Soneike, knocking on peoples doors and informing them about fibre. It went very well, until it all fell through the roof with 123NET…eish
Now I am ready to start the FTTH drive again. In the meantime, Vumatel has come to Cape Town and Openserve has cherry picked all the complexes around the Zevenwacht Wine estate.

Done!

Alas, I do not have high hopes, especially for my area that is in a wasteland between Bellville and Kuils River...

Don't feel bad. I know some people who have lived in Bellville (Neighboring neighborhood) for more than 15 years, yet havn't been in Kuils River. We're usually ignored in this regard, like the terms and conditions pages... or the last piece of bread in a loaf:D
And also it's quite easy to get confused between all the '* rivers'

Sorry for the late reply, but I contacted Vumatel to figure out what their stance was on this whole movement. Unfortunately there are no short term goals, because of the distance from the rest of their network (Very high cost)
Mind you, all the other Fibre operators are basically saying the same thing, so for now I'll just keep pushing with those interests.

Did they perhaps say the number of people they require?before they will consider kuils river

Vumatel has not yet said anything about viability changing based on number of people, but rather more based on proximity of their current network to Kuils River. So I cannot say much yet.

I have gone ahead and asked for more information regarding this. Will post when I receive a reply.

QUOTE from VUMATEL: At this stage it’s more around the actual distance, but once we deem it viable then we need 30% of the community to show their support in order to roll out.

There is no reason why this can’t start already anyway, and once it becomes viable then that side is already sorted. :)

frieken hell I would love fibre, although, I live on the "wrong" side of Kuilsriver (Summerville / Hagley estate). I'll go and sign up on Vumatels www nonetheless (who knows).

I must tell you guys that over the last few weeks I have also been researching Fibre and its actually quite hectic to see how DFA (Dark Fibre Africa) AND BitCO have fibre laying ALL OVER THE PLACE in Kuilsriver. Alas................its all for BUSINESS fibre :(

I checked their coverage maps and its just green green green (ie live fibre)...all the way.

This is only part of it. I even spoke with the Director of Infrastructure & Tech for City of Cape town directly.

They have a loop of Fibre running from CBD to Stellenbosch, round to Somerset and back through Kuils River. They said it is wholesale, so ISP's are supposed to be able to use it (even gave examples like RSAWeb) but I have a feeling this going to cost too much if there is not sufficient demand. Even all the schools have received free Fibre from this loop in the beginning of 2017.

It passes by Amandel Rd. Mikro, De Kuilen and - I think - Jan Kriel all received Gbps Fibre with public Wi-Fi hotspots coming soon.... Meaning the backbone/infrastructure is well in place, but gaining support has proven a bit hard, because people simply don't know about Fibre and its benefits here. (Weet-bix jokes incoming:D)

Yay! We are finally on a counter and the Vumatel Fibre map seems to be moving slowly closer to Kuils River.
Now we just need to start filling the bar up!
