Cape Town - The Press Ombudsman received a complaint on Monday about a controversial column written by Kuli Roberts in the Sunday World.
The column has caused a storm on Twitter, with City Press editor Ferial Haffajee tweeting: “If Bullard was fired for racism then so must Avusa fire Kuli Roberts. Sunday World column on coloureds. Racist, vile, disgusting [sic].”
Radio 702 DJ John Robbie also called for the Sunday World to sack the columnist whose weekly piece is titled “Bitch’s Brew”, and News24’s editor Jannie Momberg called the column “blatant racism”.
Mail and Guardian online editor Chris Roper said he did not understand why there was a controversy and simply thought “with a bit of editing it would have been funny”.
The column was removed by the newspaper but sometime on Monday it was back on the website.
This comes just days after government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi apologised for saying that there was an “oversupply” of coloured people in the Western Cape.
He said they should look to the rest of the country “to see where they can meet the supply”.
In the article, Roberts writes that a "friend" explained to her why coloured women are “crazy”.
The tongue-in-cheek piece writes about coloured people who “shout and throw plates, have no front teeth and eat fish like they are trying to deplete the ocean and love to fight in public”.
Angry South Africans who read the article described Roberts as “pathetic, attention-whoring and a bad writer” on social networking platforms.
One tweeter, ‘KeenyKeenz' wrote: “That Sunday World piece by Kuli Roberts is ignorant, offensive, blatantly racist and proves her, I assume self-given, title of 'bitch'.”
