Aah, thank God for the M&G: "Mail and Guardian online editor Chris Roper said he did not understand why there was a controversy and simply thought “with a bit of editing it would have been funny”." Spot on, it's not a very good piece but it's got a few funny bits and nothing hateful about it.

I think the issue was not one of whether it is humourous or not - she obviously tries to be funny and fails IMO.

The issue is that someone like David Bullard also wrote in lighter vein, but got the axe because of his comments.

How much of the stereotype highlighted in the article is actually true ?

I suppose other races find it humorous whilst a coloured person wont think it that funny.

.....sad that Bullard spoke the truth and was vilified as a racist.

David crossed a line, he'd already spent miles of column space pushing that envelope.
It's actually strange that when he was fired most of his columns were toeing the PC line quite a bit...stopped being funny. I actually bought his first book.

Being coloured myself, I agree that with a bit of editing, it might have been funny, or at least they would have a better basis on which to argue that the piece was intended to be humorous. There truly is nothing sacred when it comes to humour and subject is regarded as sensitive when it comes to poking fun. The problem remains that the manner in which is was written didn't create any sense of humour.. I wasn't offended by the piece at all.. mostly because the stuff she said was true.. I still have my letter from Uncle Alan.... The problem is the writer is either a bad writer or has a really bad sense of humour, its a clear attempt at humour but doesnt come off that way.. Anyways, time to go home and drink some black label, smoke some cigarettes and throw some plates at my wife. Best part about getting home is that I can take my front teeth out... i work at that Spar where they put up the "No passion gap" sign....
 
from my perspective the writer is actually defending the coloured girls from her friend's misconceptions...she didn't bring this up,this are everyday gossips that some people talk about,not directed to anyone in particular,this article is supposed to be funny,we all know that fun can always be twisted to bring out some serious staff
 
She is married to a white man, isn't she? Doesn't that mean she has coloured children?
