KZN ANCYL call for extra taxes

Durban - The ANC Youth League has intensified its call for free higher education by proposing taxes on JSE-listed companies, a levy on vehicle owners and 5% of government tenders over R1 million as methods to fund free education.

Youth League leaders in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday also denied reports that the league planned to “shut down the country” if free education was not implemented by next year.

Speaking to the Daily News on how and where funding for free higher education would come from, Kwazi Mshengu, ANCYL provincial chairperson, said there should be a re-prioritisation of things that were state-funded.

“As we have called for land expropriation without compensation, some of the money must be re-channelled to fund free education. We are also saying education should be a societal issue and our proposal is that everyone should contribute towards education.

“We want there to be a fuel levy for every vehicle owner, except public transport, to be charged towards free education,” Mshengu said.

The youth league has also called for a dedicated tax, that would not go into the national fiscus, on JSE-listed companies that would go towards funding free education.

He added that the ANC government would contact the companies, but it should also make legislation to this end.

“When government issues a tender above R1m at least 5% of it must go to funding education - that is part of our proposals,” Mshengu said.

He said the youth league had also made submissions to the Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education and Training on ways to fund free higher education.

“What’s important is that as part of young people we represent the views and demands of young people, so young people demand free education and they want it now; that is why we are pushing this agenda.

Feckers knows that they will never pay taxes so it's no water off their backs. When will they realise that free education in a country with so few tax payers will never be feasible. Universities will close down, lecturers with the know how will leave for greener pastures and in the end the qualifications will be worth less than the piece of paper it's printed on.

Also, should people who do not have or plan on having children, also pay?

Unfortunately nothing is for free and we cant expect the government to pay for it as they are stealing all the loose changes as it is, so it will eventually just fall onto the taxpayer once more.
 
Just give them the diplomas and certificates. They will soon realise the value of something you receive for 'free'.

I’ve been to 3 universities, 2 of them free. All of them internationally renown with Nobel prizes teachers and students. All three were in the European top 50 and one in the top 10.

But I guess it’s worth shyte, right ?

Same places where European presidents, ministers, economists, constitutional court judges, IMF directors, CEOs, philosophers, MIT professors got their degrees for free.

Definitely no SA politicians there.

In a more developed country then I would agree free is not shyte, but here it does hold true
