No link. Just watching Morning Live and heard that the KZN census workers are on strike because they receiving a lesser wage than their other provincial co-workers. Will the striking ever stop. It seems like everyone wants to strike.

I read this last night and just gave up...

Durban - Census workers in Durban downed tools on Monday, complaining they were paid less than their counterparts in other provinces.

About 100 workers picketed outside the census offices in Durban's Samora Machel Street, threatening to withhold filled-out questionnaires if their demands were not met.

Monday was the last day of the 21-day enumeration phase which included the distribution of about 20 million questionnaires.

Statistician general Pali Lehohla sent senior official Risenga Maluleke on Monday to negotiate with the striking workers.

"We have sent Maluleke to mediate. They are in a meeting as we speak," said census spokesperson Sivuyile Mangxamba.

The striking workers were supposed to submit filled questionnaires on Monday evening.

The striking workers said they learnt in the media that they were underpaid.

"Our contracts stipulates that we will be paid R5 000 but last week we learned that census field workers in Johannesburg were getting paid R10 000 and workers in Pietermaritzburg were being paid R7 500," said a striker who did not want to be named.

The strikers claimed they were stationed in far away areas and had been forced to fork out more for transport.

"We were also not compensated for the airtime we used for work as promised," the worker said.

Lehohla said earlier on Monday that payment of census field workers would begin on November 10, and was expected to cost a total of R700m.

Enumerators would receive a flat fee of R5 000 and their supervisors R7 000, he told reporters in Pretoria.

If its true, then they have reason to strike IMO...

It probably will be - remember that they have NOT been paid yet. Pay day for them is 10 November.

This "strike" is based on rumours and then spread by the media.
Surely the census workers have verified this source, yes?

Hao, no census from Mr Smith, send him to jail ........... oops, sorry Mr Smith, it was just your friendly strike that got you sent to prison.

There is a difference between not being counted and refusing to be counted.

Of course, you could get the odd census counter with an axe to grind about his/her neighbours and says they refused to be counted.

The census lady told me that if she did not count 100% of her houses she will not get paid. I thought it was going to cause trouble.

The strikers must come from the South Coast, as I certainly haven't been counted!

Second Census in a row where they feel they don'y have to count me....:(
