I know this should be in the 'General software and hardware' section, but there are more people here to reply if they know ;)

Anyone know of LaCie ... ? I want an external HDD and they seem alright in price. The site is here http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10033

Yeah Lacie is a pretty good product, been making products for apple macs for awhile. Also check out the Iomega External HD's. I got one which works pretty well, and nice price to.

They are crap HDD's in nice cases, thats all they are. BTW they are Maxtor Drives inside them... ;-(

Its Simple guys, Buy the drive you want, and Get a nice looking Housing for it. It even works out Cheaper.

If possible, get a Lacie Case and gooi a WD in there. The case is designed F.A. Porsche - which means that it's the coolest looking drive around (for those who really don't care what harddrive is in the thing, and have taste in design).

Sorted!

punch 2 holes in your box get some cable extenders, put a non-conductive plate over your case, put an internal drive on top, connect cables, there you go :D

Check out these enclosures, I've been using them for a while and they work great...
Most of the reviews out there also rate them very well.

Any porch design component is gonna cost an arm and a leg :(

PS: Stay away from maxtor hard drives, they are absolute rubbish!

Those are too big...

PS: dont touch maxtor drives even with a stick.

I only have Maxtor HDD's and they are about 3 years old now, and has not given 1 day's problems. Im happy with them and I would recommend them as I use them in my systems i build.

Farquaon....

It's quite obvious that you only work with small quantities of hard drives :p

That, or you've been extremely lucky.

If I had to compare the amount of faulty hard drives from maxtor we have had to return (before we stopped selling them) to the ones from Seagate or Western Digital, the ratio would probably be 10:1 if not more

Could be, not going to argue with you. I do not run a massive operation. But im talking for an experience point of view, and if i have to go by that, then Maxtor is 100%.
