Lamborghini Countach to be reborn as 800bhp V12 hybrid

Sant'Agata has confirmed that the second of its 2021 unveilings will be inspired by its venerable Countach supercar

In a shock announcement, Lamborghini has confirmed that it will revive the hallowed Countach nameplate for a new supercar.

The second of two models confirmed for a debut in 2021 by CEO Stefan Winkelmann earlier this year, the reborn Countach will take its powertrain largely from the Sián hypercar, mating the firm's 6.5-litre V12 with a supercapacitor for enhanced acceleration and lower emissions.

Sant'Agata has confirmed nothing else about the new arrival, save for previewing its striking wedge-shaped silhouette, already clearly influenced by Marcello Gandini's original design for the Countach. Interestingly, the firm appears to have taken inspiration from the earlier, LP400-generation Countach, which went without the outlandish rear wing associated with later models.

Given we know it will fundamentally share the Sián's powertrain, total output will be somewhere in the region of 800bhp, which means it will likely closely match the Sián for straight-line speed, too: 0-62mph in less than three seconds and a top speed of nearly 220mph.

Expect styling influence from the Countach to extend to straighter and more clearly defined body lines, reshaped lights at each end and various nods to the 50-year-old legend's defining design cues. A gaping side air intake is likely, for example, as are concave wheel designs and perhaps even two-piece side windows.

Having spoken exclusively to Winkelmann, Autocar understands the Countach will be a limited-run special in the vein of the Sián and Ultimae. Importantly, it will be the last Lamborghini to feature supercapacitor technology; Winkelmann said: "A supercapacitor, in our opinion, is a bridge technology which does not fulfil the needs we have for the future to reduce emissions."

The Countach will be followed in 2023 by the long-awaited successor to Lamborghini's Aventador supercar flagship, which will keep its V12 engine but adopt plug-in hybrid power as the firm accelerates its transition to electrification.

Lamborghini Countach revival officially announced after nearly 31 years

A new example of the Lamborghini Countach has been confirmed by the Italian manufacturer 47 years after it was first introduced. No details regarding the product have been revealed but the teaser video used for the announcement promises it’ll boast the same poster car heritage as its predecessor.

Based on the engine note heard from the 21 second video, it’s highly probable that the new Lamborghini Countach will be based off the Huracan and use the firm’s naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10 mill. The display also gives us a quick preview of the car under a cover which highlights a somewhat of a wedge-shape silhouette with modern proportions.

The original Lamborghini Countach design was penned by Marcello Gandini and made its debut in concept guise at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. By the time it reached production, a number of revisions were made but the car retained its dramatic proportions. In LP400-guise, it boasted a mid-mounted 3,9-litre V12 good for 276 kW which was sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Over the course of its 16 year life-cycle, before being replaced by the Diablo under the guise of Chrysler’s ownership, This engine morphed into a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injected 5,2-litre V12 which delivered 309 kW. More power hungry enthusiasts had to opt for the six downdraft Weber carburetted version with 335 kW.

Lamborghini Countach set for a modern reboot, company confirms

The Lamborghini Countach is set to be reinvented for the modern era, according to a teaser video posted by the Italian supercar maker on social media this week.

“The classic Countach was the stuff of dreams. Now, 50 years later, the new Lamborghini Countach is coming. Stay tuned!” Lamborghini announced on its Facebook page. The company also posted a teaser image of the vehicle beneath a cover, on its web page, implying a wedge-shaped retro design of the kind you’d expect from a modern day Countach.

Lamborghini hasn’t confirmed any of the technical details for the Countach as yet, but Autocar believes the rebooted supercar have a similar powertrain to the limited-edition Sián, which was powered by a 578kW 6.5-litre V12 hybrid unit, also featuring a supercapacitor that adds 25kW to the tally.

As with the Sián, Autocar expects that the new Countach will be built in extremely limited numbers and that it won’t replace the Aventador, with the latter set to get a direct successor in 2023.

There are no pics yet. It's been announced, not revealed.
I know........ But want pics. Loved the Countach. Remember as a kid i was on my bicycle when one stopped next to me at a robot. (Yes - Bicycle riders should stop at a robot). I could look right over it's top so low was this car.

Actually that's misleading. Makes it sound like the car is low but in reality you're old as **** and it was a pennyfarthing.

Not long to go

Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 To Be Revealed This Week

Out of nowhere, Lamborghini has decided to bring back the Countach nameplate to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic supercar and we will be seeing it soon.

A photo leaked on Instagram shows the full name to be Countach LPI 800-4, with LPI indicating a hybrid powertrain and the number suggesting it will have nearly 800 horsepower.

Initial rumours pointed to the new Countach using the same V12 and supercapacitor hybrid system as the limited-run Sian, and that’s the likeliest setup. But that car didn’t use the LPI designation, so there’s a chance the new Countach could use a new hybrid system, maybe even a plug-in-hybrid setup.

New Lamborghini Countach teaser shots show retro detailing

Lamborghini got its fans in a frenzy earlier this week when it announced that it was working on a new Countach for the modern era.

However, the initial teaser image of the car under a cover didn’t reveal much, but now three new images of the Lamborghini Countach have been added to the Italian supercar maker’s Instagram page and although they don’t give us the full picture, they do reveal some interesting details.

One of the images shows us part of the front end, where we see sharp angles akin to the original Lamborghini Countach, while the particularly large front splitter adds a modern touch.

Lamborghini also released an image of the vehicle’s mid-mounted V12 engine sitting beneath a glass encasing. Although we might have deemed this obvious, this is the first time Lamborghini has officially confirmed 12-cylinder power for its new supercar, although the rest of the details remain unclear at this stage.

The evidence points to it being a hybrid, given that Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann referred to the recently revealed Aventador LP 780 Ultimae as the company’s last purely-combustion-engined V12 production model.

I wonder why they used the V10 Huracan engine sounds in the teaser video?

I think every guy in the 80's had a poster of one on their wall.
