Lamborghini Countach reborn

Return of a legend: Lamborghini is bringing back the iconic Countach supercar

• The original Countach debuted in 1974.

• Lamborghini teased images on the new Countach on its Instagram page.

• The new model will likely employ a hybridised V12 engine.

Lamborghini is going back to the future by resurrecting one of its most iconic models.

A teasing post on the Italian brand's Instagram account showed three images of what appears to be a modern rendition of the legendary Countach supercar.

The model initially debuted in 1974 and also celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021. It might just be a coincidence that Lamborghini is also teasing images of a new Countach on the eve of its 50th birthday.

Lamborghini teases new Countach

The definitive supercar is making a comeback. Lamborghini is preparing to take the wraps off the next incarnation of the legendary Countach.

The St’Agata-based marque has launched some of the most evocative model names in the motoring world, but even though it sells more performance SUVs (the Urus) than mid-engined super- and hypercars these days, Lamborghini and arch-rival Ferrari made “supercar” part of the automotive lexicon long before Koenigsegg, McLaren, Pagani, Porsche and others even tried building one.

Although the Miura was the world’s first supercar, the Countach is the most iconic. The wedge-shaped supercar, which defined the brand for two decades, was superseded by the Diablo in 1990.

Although Lamborgihi’s subsequent mid-engined supercars have all featured similar proportions and styling drama to the Countach, its name has remained dormant. Until now.

Despite the brand underdoing challenges, including how to disengage from its legacy V12 engines, Lamborghini is looking to the past to secure its future. And that means a Countach revival.

Lamborghini has teased some new Countach images after confirming the nameplate’s return earlier this week. Although details on the new car are mostly cryptic, it will feature some of the last naturally-aspirated V12s assembled by Lamborghini.

New 2021 Lamborghini Countach images leak online

Images appear on social media; Sant'Agata had previously confirmed that the second of its 2021 unveilings will be inspired by 1970s supercar

Leaked images of the new Lamborghini Countach have appeared on social media, ahead of the official unveiling tomorrow evening.

In a shock announcement, Lamborghini had previously confirmed that it would revive the hallowed Countach nameplate for a new supercar.

The second of two models confirmed for a debut in 2021 by CEO Stefan Winkelmann earlier this year, the reborn Countach will take its powertrain largely from the Sián hypercar, mating the firm's 6.5-litre V12 with a supercapacitor for enhanced acceleration and lower emissions.

Sant'Agata had previously confirmed nothing else about the new arrival, save for previewing its striking wedge-shaped silhouette, already clearly influenced by Marcello Gandini's original design for the Countach. Interestingly, the firm appears to have taken inspiration from the earlier, LP400-generation Countach, which went without the outlandish rear wing associated with later models.

The leaked images, posted to Twitter by user @salomondrin, show clear inspiration from the original, with a familiar side profile and trademark angles.

Given we know it will fundamentally share the Sián's powertrain, total output will be somewhere in the region of 800bhp, which means it will likely closely match the Sián for straight-line speed, too: 0-62mph in less than three seconds and a top speed of nearly 220mph.

Expect styling influence from the Countach to extend to straighter and more clearly defined body lines, reshaped lights at each end and various nods to the 50-year-old legend's defining design cues. A gaping side air intake is likely, for example, as are concave wheel designs and perhaps even two-piece side windows.

Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4: This Looks Like It And It's Amazing

The revived supercar from Lamborghini could be a hybrid rival to those from Ferrari

A new Lamborghini Countach is officially set to debut at Pebble Beach on Sunday, but we may have gotten an early look at the machine that’s going to revive the iconic nameplate. The leaked images shown here are from spy photog varryx_, who alleges they are official, but we won’t know for sure until Lamborghini takes off the car cover.

If this leaked redesign is vindicated at the official unveiling, it seems like the carmaker did a decent job updating the looks of the Countach while retaining the lines and overall feel of the classic supercar. From the profile, to the side slats and even the wheels, the heritage of the Countach is there.

My favorite call back on the Countach has to be the badging, though. The new supercar will possibly wear similar lettering down to the side-swept font, as if the name itself had to be italicized. This isn’t just a Countach you’re looking at. It’s a Countach.

The nameplate is kind of in a weird place, though, neither centered nor all the way to the side as you can see from the official teasers Lamborghini has shared. It’s also bit strange because I can’t recall many cars that wear their model name on the front end.

That is a hard fail. Very few shared styling ques. Disappointed

These guys did it way better.

Ah the Countach. The car loved by little boys and hated by everyone who’s ever driven it.

Err guys the profile & rear looks like the Sian, it also takes the V12 Hybrid system from that vehicle.

It's like they tried a little at the front, slapped on a countach badge and then gave up on changing anything at the rear.

I like these renders. Especially the back end, I think it still needs side vents that was part of the door like the original.

These pics are pretty cool, but when do we get renders of the new Countach?

New Lamborghini Countach leaked ahead of imminent reveal

Pictures of the reincarnated Lamborghini Countach have leaked onto the internet ahead of the supercar’s imminent reveal, and although its design pays the necessary tribute to its forebear, it is perhaps more modern than retro.

The pictures, which show us the car from all exterior angles, were posted on Twitter by Alejandro Salomon.

Of course, Lamborghini has not released any of the technical details as yet, but previous speculation pointed to it being based on the Sian, and the exterior design similarities that we see seem to back that theory.

Earlier this week Autocar reported that the new Lamborghini Countach would likely have a similar powertrain to the Sián, and here we’re talking about a 578kW 6.5-litre V12 assisted by a 25kW supercapacitor.

The hybrid theory makes sense, given that Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann referred to the recently revealed Aventador LP 780 Ultimae as the company’s last purely-combustion-engined V12 production model.

Usually, it’s reserved for the marque and/or logo, but I’m liking it on the Lambo. It feels like filigree and I normally hate that, but it works! Maybe because there’s filigree elsewhere, like on the engine that reads V12 or the fuel door that reads Lamborghini in cursive lettering — just in case you needed a reminder that both the car and maker are historic.
