Lamborghini is poised to announce production plans for the Urus SUV this week, according to reports by news wire Bloomberg. The news follows lobbying with the Italian government, which is rumoured to be providing tax incentives to keep final production in Italy.
The supercar maker met with officials earlier in spring 2015 and Bloomberg claimed that incentives as high as €80 million (£56m) were on the table to stop the sporty crossover being built overseas. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, Audi chief exec Rupert Stadler and Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi are reportedly scheduled to attend a joint press conference in Rome on Wednesday 27 May 2015 where the Urus project will be confirmed, reports Automotive News Europe.
Lambo 4x4: Italian, German, Bratislavian or British?
Volkswagen, which owns Lamborghini outright through its Audi division, already pools manufacturing of many of its upmarket SUVs and it is likely that the most efficient way to build the Urus would be alongside Touaregs, Cayennes and Bentaygas with parts manufactured elsewhere in Europe at group facilities.
However, Lamborghini is keen to keep at least final assembly in Italy in a bid to protect its national identity - important when you're likely to be charging well over £100,000 for each Urus sold.
Lamborghin Urus: the background
The Urus was first shown at the Beijing motor show in 2012 as a concept car, but has yet to be approved for production as the successor to the LM002 ‘Rambo Lambo’. The LM002 was an oddball curiosity which ended production in 1993.
However, the green light is thought to be a formality and Sant’Agata predicts it can sell as many as 3000 SUVs a year - doubling its annual production at a stroke and likely to create as many as 500 extra jobs, even if they are largely in final assembly.
