Lamborghini is poised to announce production plans for the Urus SUV this week, according to reports by news wire Bloomberg. The news follows lobbying with the Italian government, which is rumoured to be providing tax incentives to keep final production in Italy.

The supercar maker met with officials earlier in spring 2015 and Bloomberg claimed that incentives as high as €80 million (£56m) were on the table to stop the sporty crossover being built overseas. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, Audi chief exec Rupert Stadler and Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi are reportedly scheduled to attend a joint press conference in Rome on Wednesday 27 May 2015 where the Urus project will be confirmed, reports Automotive News Europe.

Lambo 4x4: Italian, German, Bratislavian or British?

Volkswagen, which owns Lamborghini outright through its Audi division, already pools manufacturing of many of its upmarket SUVs and it is likely that the most efficient way to build the Urus would be alongside Touaregs, Cayennes and Bentaygas with parts manufactured elsewhere in Europe at group facilities.

However, Lamborghini is keen to keep at least final assembly in Italy in a bid to protect its national identity - important when you're likely to be charging well over £100,000 for each Urus sold.

Lamborghin Urus: the background

The Urus was first shown at the Beijing motor show in 2012 as a concept car, but has yet to be approved for production as the successor to the LM002 ‘Rambo Lambo’. The LM002 was an oddball curiosity which ended production in 1993.

However, the green light is thought to be a formality and Sant’Agata predicts it can sell as many as 3000 SUVs a year - doubling its annual production at a stroke and likely to create as many as 500 extra jobs, even if they are largely in final assembly.

Lamborghini Urus SUV in Production Soon

Lamborghini’s Urus SUV is reportedly going into production in April 2017!

Lamborghini is preparing to enter the booming SUV market with its super SUV, the Urus, and the firm’s head honcho, Stefano Domenicali, has confirmed that production will begin in April 2017. The Urus will be built in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, and the new model is expected to be the fastest SUV on the planet when it finally arrives. But before you get too excited, the actual production model is only expected in 2018 as the first models to roll off the production will be prototypes. The initial prototypes will be used to train, educate and prepare sales networks and dealerships before the model is delivered to customers.

“Production will start in April, though the plant will initially build pre-series models. This is an entirely new process so the first few cars will be prototypes. It’s a very delicate period, which is why 2017 will be a very important year for us. Don’t underestimate the big step we’re taking,” said Domenicali.

The Urus will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine, while a hybrid version is expected at a later stage, which will be a first for the Italian supercar maker.

Lamborghini's new all-wheel-drive SUV will arrive in 2018 and be available with a hybrid powertrain and a turbocharged V8

The Lamborghini Urus SUV has been caught testing for the first time in spy pictures that show a test mule in Europe.

Despite the heavy disguise, it’s clear the production version of the all-wheel-drive turbocharged SUV will stick closely to the rakish styling of the concept unveiled at the 2012 Beijing motor show.

Although the spy pictures show a typically sharp and angular Lamborghini design on the outside, Autocar understands the interior will be significantly more comfort-orientated and conventional.

Lamborghini’s first SUV since the 1986 LM002 will be built on the same platform that underpins the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and 2018 Porsche Cayenne. It will feature the brand’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain, which will be offered alongside a twin-turbo 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine in the line-up.

That engine will be the company’s first turbocharged V8. Lamborghini bosses have eschewed the naturally aspirated V10 and V12 units from the Huracán and Aventador for their new SUV in pursuit of better fuel economy and an extensive power spread, with low-end torque and top-end power.

Lamborghini has already confirmed to Autocar that it won’t offer rear-wheel-drive variants of the Urus. That's in line with its strategy for the all-wheel-drive Aventador, but not the Huracán, which is available in four-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive guises.

The SUV will be a luxury rival to the likes of the Bentayga, Range Rover SVAutobiography and forthcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Autocar understands that special-edition models of the Urus are under consideration. These include a hardcore Superveloce variant and a more focused luxury model.

Production of the Urus may begin around April this year and Autocar understands pricing is likely to be similar to that of the Huracán, which starts around £180k.

Lamborghini has been experiencing strong growth through sales of the Huracán and Aventador. The company has been recruiting extra staff in preparation for production of the Urus and is aiming to double its worldwide sales by 2019. Its production site in Sant’Agata Bolognese is set to double in size to cater for the demand.

Huge delays since the concept car’s first outing in Beijing five years ago led to speculation that the Urus could be axed, but instead the Asterion hybrid sports car was put on hold in favour of the SUV and these spy pictures show development is on track.

Now Chinese brand reveals Lamborghini Urus clone!

Chinese automaker Zotye has already brought us a Porsche Macan clone, a Volkswagen Tiguan lookalike and a Smart ForTwo copy. But now the Yongkang-based brand has released (really poor quality) images of its new Concept S, which bears more than just a passing resemblance to the Lamborghini Urus.

Of course, the Urus – which will run on the same Volkswagen Group MLB Evo platform as the likes of the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, next-generation Porsche Cayenne and upcoming Volkswagen Touareg – has yet to go into production, but is expected to be on sale in initial markets by the end of 2017.

The Zotye Concept S will be fully revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month, some five years after the Urus concept was first unveiled.

The Chinese concept clearly draws (heavy) inspiration from the rear end of the Urus (as you can see in the comparison below), while its profile closely follows the lines of the Lamborghini, too. Up front, though, Zotye has seemingly resisted the urge to copy-and-paste, lending the Concept S unique headlamps and a bumper than isn’t quite identical to that of the Urus.

So, one question remains: will Zotye put its concept into production before Lamborghini starts selling the Urus?

How much power the Lamborghini Urus will make…

Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali has revealed the peak power output of the twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 that will provide urge to the upcoming Urus SUV.

According to Automotive News, Domenicali said that the eight-cylinder Urus would churn out 650 hp, which translates to some 485 kW. That would make it more powerful than any SUV currently offered in South Africa.

The CEO added that a plug-in hybrid version would become available about a year after the standard V8 launches.

According to the report, the Italian automaker expects to build some 1 000 units of the new super-SUV in 2018, before growing that annual production figure to 3 500 in 2019.

Sales of the Urus are expected to start in initial markets in the second quarter of 2018.

Why do they out those stupid things on the test cars?
We can see what it looks like, that "camo" doesnt work very well

The camo does work. All you can make out is a broad silhouette. The camo is there to throw you off from the true design lines. Often fake plastic panels with the camo is used & then you cant make out jack.

There is a reason why all the manufacturers use this camo when testing vehicles.

Lamborghini Urus name patented ahead of 2017 reveal

Lamborghini's new all-wheel-drive SUV will arrive on roads in early 2018 and be available with a hybrid powertrain and a turbocharged V8

Lamborghini has patented the name Urus for its first SUV model, which is due to be revealed later this year.

The name has been public since the reveal of the Urus concept that made its debut at the 2012 Beijing motor show, which previewed the rakish design of Lamborghini's all-wheel-drive turbocharged SUV.

Recent sightings of development cars at the Nüburgring show familiar sharp design features on the exterior, but Autocar understands the model's interior will be significantly more comfort-orientated and conventional.

Lamborghini Urus SUV confirmed for 4 December reveal

Lamborghini's upcoming SUV will be the only plug-in hybrid across the company's range

The Lamborghini Urus SUV will be revealed on the 4 December before production begins at the brand's Sant’Agata Bolognese site in northern Italy, the company has confirmed.

The Urus range will feature the brand's first plug-in hybrid, according to R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani. It will be the only hybrid in the Lamborghini line-up and be offered alongside a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 Urus.

Lamborghini’s first SUV since the LM002 (1986-1993) is likely to make its first appearance next year and go on sale in 2018. Like the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga with which it shares a platform, the Urus will also feature 48V-powered active anti-roll suspension.

“The design [of the Urus] is pure Lamborghini,” said Reggiani. “It has evolved considerably since the [2015] concept and the finished car is much better inside and out. Turbocharging will be “completely mandatory” for the Urus, he said, because as an SUV it needs huge torque.

“A supersports car is completely different; you need the responsiveness of the engine, to feel the spark of every cylinder. We will keep normally aspirated engines for our other models. They are still the best choice.”

Reggiani said Lamborghini will concentrate its R&D efforts on power, weight and aerodynamics, because “handling is a function” of these. “We want to be a leader here and have a chance to change the rules of the game,” he added, alluding to new, as yet undisclosed developments.

Reggiani said he sees a strong distinction between the firm’s four-wheel-drive models and the growing number of rear-wheel-drive variants. A modern electronic chassis control system like that of the Huracán LP580-2 is no substitute for the ability of four-wheel drive to transfer power to the road, he explained. Therefore, Lamborghini will continue to offer both driveline systems.
