Lamborghini Celebrates the LM002's Legacy, the Original Luxury SUV

Lamborghini professionally restores an LM002 in anticipation of the Urus' debut.

The Lamborghini Urus performance SUV may be newest and most popular model that the raging bull has put out this year, but it has big shoes to fill. Long before the Audi takeover, Lamborghini built the LM002, regarded as the spark that started the luxury performance SUV trend.

Just 300 LM002s were built, originally for military use with the codename "Cheetah." The SUV officially debuted in 1986, featuring a 450-horsepower V-12 lifted straight out of the Countach Quattrovalvole. The LM002 was comfortable in every environment thanks to its trio of locking differentials, four-wheel drive, and Pirelli Scorpion tires specifically developed for the vehicle.

Before the Urus goes live on Dec. 4, Lamborghini wants to remind us that its SUV roots run deep. To celebrate 25 years since the LM002's production ended, Lambo recruited its Polo Storico division to restore a black LM002, chassis #12231 to be exact. The pristine SUV now sits in the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

"[The LM002 was] a great innovative project in which there was a chance to share the super sport approach together with a difference spec of a car that was used for a different purpose," said Lamborghini CEO Stephen Domencali in a press release.

It may not have been the first of its kind, but current performance SUVs like the Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne Turbo take noticeable inspiration from the LM002. In a world where crossovers reign and enthusiast cars might soon go extinct, these hot SUVs may be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Lamborghini doubles size of its plant as Urus nears

Lamborghini says it has doubled the size of its production site in Sant’Agata Bolognese ahead of the launch of the new Urus.

The Italian automaker has completed the expansion of its factory from 80 000 m2 to 160 000 m2, with capacity also expected to double to 7 000 units a year once production of the new SUV hits full stride.

The upgraded production facility houses a new assembly line dedicated solely to the Urus (complete with “new production technologies” to support workers in assembly activities), as well as a new finishing department for all Lamborghini models, a new office building and a fresh logistics warehouse.

In addition, a new test track has also been built, complete with thirteen different surfaces that the automaker says are “specific to SUVs”.

Lamborghini says the factory expansion was completed in just 18 months, during which it continued to operate at full production capacity.

Lamborghini Urus four-wheel steering demonstrated on video

Lamborghini's upcoming SUV will be the only plug-in hybrid across the company's range

Lamborghini has demonstrated the off-road capability of its upcoming Urus SUV on video, showing the car’s four-wheel steering system.

The all-new SUV, the brand’s first, gets a four-wheel steering system like its Aventador S sibling. There’s also a traction control system with six separate settings: Strada (road), Sport, Corsa (track), Sabbia (sand), Terra (dirt), and Neve (snow).

The Urus will be revealed on the 4 December before production begins at the brand's Sant’Agata Bolognese site in northern Italy, the company has confirmed.

The Urus range will feature the brand's first plug-in hybrid, according to R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani. It will be the only hybrid in the Lamborghini line-up and be offered alongside a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 Urus.

Lamborghini’s first SUV since the LM002 (1986-1993) is likely to make its first appearance next year and go on sale in 2018. Like the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga with which it shares a platform, the Urus will also feature 48V-powered active anti-roll suspension.

How quickly the Lamborghini Urus will hit 100 km/h

The Lamborghini Urus is set to be officially unveiled early in December, but the folks over at Motor Trend have already lifted the lid on a few claimed figures.

As expected, the Italian SUV will be powered by a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol based on the familiar Audi engine of the same size.

According to the US publication, the eight-cylinder will send 485 kW and 850 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed ZF-sourced transmission.

And that 0-100 km/h time? Well, the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based automaker told Motor Trend that the Urus will be capable of completing the obligatory dash to three figures in 3,7 seconds, although prototypes still being tested are hitting 100 km/h even quicker. In addition, Lamborghini says its SUV will boast a top speed in excess of 300 km/h.

Sales of the Urus – which will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s so-called MLB Evo platform, and therefore share much with the current Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and new Porsche Cayenne, as well as with the upcoming VW Touareg – are expected to start in initial markets in the second quarter of 2018.

Lamborghini Urus picture leaks onto internet

Upcoming Urus is claimed to be the fastest and sharpest SUV yet; anti-roll system reduces body roll by applying torque to the suspension

The Lamborghini Urus has leaked onto the internet after the car's digital image was accidentally shown on a frame of a promotional video.

The frame showed the car picture on its infotainment screen, but it has since been edited so the infotainment now shows another menu (see video below). The original image revealed the car's front-end design without camouflage for the first time.

Lamborghini wants its new Urus to be the market's fastest and sharpest SUV when it launches this December, and it released the video to demonstrate the car's dynamic abilities.

Footage of the car being driven aggressively on circuit illustrates the car's 48V-powered active anti-roll suspension technology, which is most effective when the car is set to Corsa (track) mode.

The system, which is related to the one fitted to the Bentley Bentayga (the Urus uses the same platform, as does the Audi Q7), reduces body roll by applying torque to the suspension to counter lean. It works with the car's torque vectoring technology and four-wheel steering to boost agility.

This is what the new Lamborghini Urus sounds like…

The Lamborghini Urus will come with six driving modes.

In the latest of a series of teaser videos, Lamborghini has given us an idea of what the new Urus will sound like in the angriest of its six driving modes.

Billed by the Italian automaker as “the world’s first super SUV”, the Urus is set to be officially revealed in the first week of December. It will run on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, and therefore share its underpinnings with the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, as well as with the upcoming VW Touareg.

We already know that power will come from a fettled version of the VW Group’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol, which will send its 485 kW and 850 N.m to all four corners via a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

And that means you shouldn’t expect it to sound anything like the screaming naturally aspirated V10 and V12 engines for which the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based brand has become known (even when the drive mode selector is flicked into “Strada”).

The Lamborghini Urus, which the firm claims will be the fastest and sharpest-handling SUV yet, will be launched in Italy later today (December 4).

The eagerly anticipated machine, which will join the Aventador and Huracan in Lamborghini's model line-up, will be unveiled at the firm's newly expanded factory in Sant'Agate Bolognese in Italy. The Urus is set to become Lamborghini's best-selling model.

In the build-up to the reveal, Lamborghini has shown some of the styling and technical details of the machine in a series of videos and images. The most recent video showed the Urus' thin taillight strip for the first time, sporting a design that looks similar to that of the Asterion - Lamborghini's shelved hybrid supercar.

Lamborghini Urus revealed: full specs of new 641bhp (478kw) super-SUV

All-new model uses shared underpinnings with the Bentley Bentayga; it's claimed to offer 'unrivalled performance' for an SUV

Lamborghini chief Stefano Domenicali has insisted that the Italian company’s “visionary” new Urus SUV fits perfectly alongside its line-up of supercars.

The 641bhp Urus – described by Lamborghini as a ‘super-SUV’ – was unveiled in Bologna, Italy, on Monday.

Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the four-wheel-drive Urus can achieve 0-62mph in 3.6sec, with a top speed of 190mph. It will cost around £165,000 on the road.

Domenicali says that level of performance reflects a machine that “elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible”. He said that the Urus is “a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics and emotion, as well as drivable every day in a range of environments”.

He added: “The Urus fits perfectly within the Lamborghini family as a high-performance car. It is the culmination of intensive development and passionate skill to create a new brand of bull: a super-SUV that transcends the boundaries of expectations and opens the door to new possibilities, for both our brand and our customers.”

Reflecting those “new possibilities”, the Urus will be built in a new factory at the firm’s Sant’Agata Bolognese base. As a result, Lamborghini’s production output will double to around 7000 cars per year.

The Urus’s dramatic exterior has been designed to embody Lamborghini’s range of supercars – following the same two-thirds body, one-third window ratio – and the firm says it also contains visual links to the LM002, the off-road SUV Lamborghini produced from 1986 until 1993.

The peaked bonnet is styled on those seen on the Miura and Aventador, while diagonal hood lines, first used on the Countach, also feature. The styling, according to the company, has been honed to maximise the car’s aerodynamic potential, with a front splitter and air intakes to channel air to the underbody.

Lamborghini has stuck with naturally aspirated V10 and V12 engines for its Aventador and Huracán, believing that it adds to the emotional experience of driving a supercar, but has used the twin-turbo 4.0-litre petrol powerplant in the Urus. The reason for this, claims the firm, is that SUVs need the additional low-rev torque, especially when being used off-road. The front-mounted unit produces 641bhp at 6800rpm, and 627lb ft between 2240- 4500rpm. As well as hitting 62mph in 3.6sec, the Urus will reach 124.2mph in 12.8sec. Carbon-ceramic brakes – measuring 440 by 40mm at the front and 370 by 30mm at the rear – help the Urus to stop from 62mph in 33.7 metres.

The turbo engine is mounted low in the car to optimise the Urus’ centre of gravity and has been designed with the central turbocharger layout near the combustion chambers to enhance engine response. The twin-scroll turbochargers run in parallel to allow for maximum power when fully loaded, while reducing turbo lag. The unit also features two exhaust flows which, Lambo said, eliminate interference in the exhaust gas cycle and cylinder deactivation to reduce fuel consumption.

The engine’s power is sent through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is electro-hydraulically controlled. The low gear ratios are set short to provide low-end power, with the high gears set at longer intervals. A specially developed torque converter is used to boost the engine response.

Lamborghini will also add a plug-in hybrid engine option to the Urus at a later stage, enabling zero-emission running - essential to ensure the car conforms to stringent emissions legislation in certain areas of the world.

The four-wheel-drive system on the Urus features a Torsen self-locking differential, with torque split 40/60 to the independent front and rear axles respectively. The system can send a maximum of 70% torque to the front wheels, or 87% to the rear, depending on demands. The rear differential features active torque vectoring, which can deliver power to each wheel according to the driving mode, style and grip levels.

The rear-wheel steering system from the Aventador S has been carried over to the Urus, and can vary the rear steering angle by three degrees in either direction. It is set to use counter-phase steering at low speeds for increased manoeuvrability and in-phase steering at higher speeds for increased stability.

The Urus is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform that has also been used for the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. The SUV is 5112mm long, 2016mm wide and 1638mm high, with a wheelbase of 3003mm. Lamborghini says the machine has a kerb weight of less than 2200kg, with the chassis using aluminium and steel to maximise stiffness. There are aluminium doors, and torsional beams replacing the traditional C-pillar. Adaptive air suspension allows the Urus to be raised and lowered from 158mm to 248mm to suit conditions, and is also adjusted by the various drive modes. Wheel options extend from 21in to 23in rims and Pirelli has developed a range of tyres especially for the super-SUV.

The Urus features up to six drive modes, designed to balance the daily usability required from an SUV with the performance expected of a Lamborghini, selected via the centre console ‘Tamburo’. Strada mode quietens the engine and calms the driving dynamics. Selecting Sport mode lowers the Urus for improved stability, while the top Corsa mode offers the most performance-focused drive.

There are also Neve (snow) and optional Terra (off-road) and Sabbia (sand) modes, which all raise the chassis to increase ground clearance, and utilise an electromechanical active roll stabilisation system to smooth the ride. There is also a fully customisable drive mode, called Ego.

The specially tuned damper valves are set to continually adjust to the conditions, hardening when cornering and softening on straights.

Lamborghini insists the Urus is as much about luxury as performance, reflected in an interior design that melds some of the firm’s traditional features with premium SUV elements.

The dashboard’s Y-design is oriented around the driver. Matching current models, the Urus dash also features numerous hexagonal elements, including the air vents and cupholders. The three-spoke steering wheel features vibration damping and there is a customisable TFT driver information display and the latest Lamborghini Infotainment System.

The driver and front passenger get 12-way adjustable heated electric seats, with 18-way adjustable front seats optional. The rear features either a three-seat bench with Isofix points or, as an option, two seats. The Urus has a boot with a 616-litre capacity, which can be extended by folding down the rear of the bench seats.

As with all Lamborghini models, the Urus name is derived from bulls. Urus (alternately known as Aurochs) are extinct wild ancestors of domestic cattle.

The first deliveries of the Urus are expected in spring next year.

The Lamborghini Urus features a 4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 650 hp (478 kW) at 6,000 rpm, maximum 6,800 rpm, and 850 Nm of maximum torque already at 2,250 rpm. With 162.7 hp/l the Urus claims one of the highest specific power outputs in its class and the best weight-to-power ratio at 3,38 kg/hp.

Urus: a multi-faceted personality

The Lamborghini Urus is as much a luxury SUV as the most powerful, with a super sports car dynamism to be enjoyed by both driver and passengers.

Its low-line coupé styling and commanding road position belie the very comfortable ride, higher ground clearance, and luxurious space within together with the latest technologies. The Urus provides easy driving in the city, maximum comfort during long journeys, thrilling super sports car dynamics on the road and track, and versatile off-road abilities in a range of environments. The Lamborghini Urus has a dual personality: it is multi-dimensional. It can be specified to be as sporty or as elegant as the owner wishes, and can equally be used as a daily luxury drive or provide an exhilarating super sports experience.

Name

As has long been the tradition at Lamborghini, the name Urus is derived from the world of bulls. The Urus, also known as Aurochs, is one of the large, wild ancestors of domestic cattle. The Spanish fighting bull, as bred for the past 500 years, is still very close to the Urus in its appearance.

Engine

The Lamborghini Urus sports a new front-mounted, 4.0 liter petrol V8 twin-turbo aluminum engine. The choice of a turbo engine, the first in a Lamborghini, reflects the desired usage range of the Urus. Especially in off-road conditions a high level of torque at low revs is necessary and can be guaranteed only by such an engine, providing optimal engine responsiveness and efficiency. Delivering 650 hp (478 kW) at 6,000 rpm, maximum 6,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 850 Nm at 2,250-4,500 rpm, the Urus has a specific power of 162.7 hp/l. With a curb weight lower than 2,200 kg the Urus is the SUV with the best weight-to-power ratio at 3.38 kg/hp.

The Urus accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 12.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 305 km/h. Braking is no less impressive: the Urus decelerates from 100 km/h to 0 in 33,7 m.

The compact engine optimizes the car's center of gravity through its low-mounted position. With a central turbo charger layout close to the combustion chambers, optimum engine responsiveness is assured. The twin-scroll turbochargers run in parallel, providing maximum power in full-load conditions. This reduces turbo lag and ensures maximum torque and smooth provision of power throughout the torque curve, even at low speeds. Two separate exhaust flows complement the cylinder firing sequence by eliminating cross-interference in the exhaust gas cycle. With a double overhead camshaft and variable valve timing, new cylinder-liner technology reduces weight while ensuring the highest performance from the eight-cylinder engine. Cylinder deactivation reduces fuel consumption for a perfect balance between vehicle performance and efficient engine function.

Transmission and gearbox

The Lamborghini Urus features an automatic eight-speed gearbox. The compact and efficient electro-hydraulically controlled planetary gearbox is tuned to provide very short low gear ratios and longer high gears. A highly efficient slip-controlled converter lock-up clutch and specially-developed torque converter guarantee a highly responsive engine, with an exceptionally powerful starting ratio for exciting acceleration, and high speed at low engine revs for optimal fuel consumption and emissions. Highly efficient gear braking is also assured.

Lamborghini four-wheel drive and torque vectoring: optimizing driving dynamics

The Lamborghini Urus' four-wheel drive system delivers safe, highly-responsive driving dynamics on every road and surface, in all weather. A Torsen central self-locking differential provides maximum control and agility in all driving conditions, particularly off-road. Torque is split 40/60 to the independent front/rear axle as standard, with a dynamic maximum torque of 70% to the front or 87% to the rear, enhancing traction to the axle with higher ground friction.

The Lamborghini Urus features active torque vectoring via a rear differential, enabling propulsive power to be instantly distributed to each individual wheel for enhanced traction, depending on the driving mode, driving style and the road grip. Torque vectoring also provides additional steering control: less steering effort is required, with enhanced agility allowing higher cornering speeds and a more sporty drive. Yaw motion is controlled, avoiding understeer into corners and tire slip during acceleration. In the driving modes STRADA, TERRA (off-road) and NEVE (snow) torque vectoring reduces understeer for safe and simple driving. In SPORT and CORSA torque vectoring allows the Urus to become more agile with a greater oversteer character: interaction between the four-wheel drive system and ESC manages oversteer to enable a precise and fun drive. In SABBIA (sand) mode, the system is calibrated to guarantee agility and precision on terrains with reduced grip such as on gravel or sand dunes, making it the ideal mode for off-road fun.

Rear-wheel steering

The Lamborghini Urus adopts the rear-wheel steering introduced in the Aventador S over the whole speed range. The rear steering angle varies up to +/- 3.0 degrees, according to vehicle speed and driving mode selected: at low speeds the rear-axle steering angle is opposite to that of the front wheels (counter-phase steering), effectively shortening the wheelbase up to 600 mm for increased agility and a reduced turning circle for increased maneuverability. At high speeds the rear axle steering angle is in the same direction as the front wheels (in-phase steering), elongating the wheelbase up to 600 mm for increased stability and ride comfort as well as optimum driving dynamics.

Price and market delivery

The first customers will take delivery of the new Lamborghini Urus in Spring 2018 at suggested retail prices as follows:

After a lengthy teaser campaign (and following a concept that debuted as long ago as 2012), Lamborghini has finally officially taken the wraps off the Urus, billing the newcomer as “the world’s first super SUV”.

Running on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform (and therefore sharing its underpinnings with the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, as well as with the upcoming VW Touareg), the Lamborghini Urus is powered by a suitably fettled version of the VW Group’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol.

The eight-cylinder engine sends 478 kW (at 6 000 r/min) and 850 N.m (from 2 250-4 500 r/min) to all four corners via a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. The Sant’Agata Bolognese-based brand says this is enough for the hefty SUV to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 3,6 seconds (and complete the 0-200 km/h sprint in 12,8 seconds) thanks in part to a launch control system, before topping out at 305 km/h. For what it’s worth, the claimed average fuel consumption comes in at 12,7 L/100 km.

Six driving modes will be available, from a dedicated off-road setting to a full-on track set-up. The permanent all-wheel-drive system features a Torsen central self-locking differential. Torque is split 40/60 to the independent front/rear axle as standard, with a “dynamic maximum” torque of 70% directed to the front or 87% to the rear. The Urus features active torque vectoring via a rear differential, enabling power to be distributed to each individual wheel for enhanced traction.

Alloy wheels on offer will range in size from 21 to 23 inches in diameter (wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber), with four-wheel steering affording the SUV added manoeuvrability.

Inside, you’ll find a trio of TFT screens: the first for the instruments, the second for infotainment and the third for climate control functions, and a virtual keyboard with hand-writing recognition), along with 12-way electrically adjustable heated front sport seats (18-way perches with ventilation and massage functions will be optionally available). The rear bench as standard comes with a movable and folding seat back as well as Isofix anchors.

Measuring 5 112 mm long and 2 016 mm wide with a wheelbase of 3 003 mm, the five-seater Urus boasts a 616-litre luggage compartment and tips the scales at less than 2 200 kg. It will ship standard with adaptive dampers, adaptive air suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes measuring a whopping 440 mm up front and 370 mm at the rear (and facilitating a claimed 100-0 km/h stopping distance of 33,7 metres). Ground clearance can be adjusted via the air suspension from 158 mm to 248 mm.
