Laminated Glass - Complex Installation Concerns

@OP I'm in the industry. If you have aluminium windows, there is now a new replacement bead that allows normal casement windows to take a double glazed IG unit. We have performed this change for several clients here who had existing aluminium windows but wanted to add sound reduction. The double glazed units will be identical when viewed against the other units so you will not fall foul of body corporate rules.

Changing the glass to 6.38 or 8.38 laminated will not offer enough sound reduction to justify the expense. Going thicker means nothing as the sound reduction is in the vinyl middle layer. If going this route, Glass South Africa offers a laminate with thicker vinyl layer for improved sound reduction.

Low E is for UV reduction and has zero effect re sound reduction, unless in laminated form and then only minor. I'd be more than willing to supply you with all the info.

Thanks.

I'll speak with the supplier about that. He might already have ordered the glass.

The thing is, 8.38mm is already... well not that cheap. I'd worry that double glazing would push the price way up.

I wonder if he can get me 8.76mm? 8.76mm has a thicker plastic layer I think.

Double glazed IG units are not cheap, but work like a bomb. AFAIK there is an 8.76 for higher impact strength (shopfront) and then there is one for extra sound reduction.

I'm looking for bang for buck.

So, yeah double glazing would get me incredible sound reduction, but its unaffordable for me. As long as 8.38mm laminated glass can offer a decent reduction, when combined with curtains I think I will be happy.

Even a 10% difference adds up.

For my last project, we changed existing glass to double glazed units made up of 6.38//6.5mm airgap//6.38. Units were about R1750+vat per square metre +labour and new aluminium beads..

A normal volume conversation outside was inaudible inside. Bang for buck? Nope. But SUPER effective!

For my 17 panes, that would a lot more expensive than my current quote!

Get some sound measurements before and after, will be interesting to compare.
