Win XP Pro. SP3. - Brand new install
Telkom 100WR ADSL router - working for 2 other laptops (Wifi and LAN connections at home).

My laptop worked fine for an hour or two (internet and email) then suddenly stopped routing any data via the ethernet or wifi. If I connect via my cell phone it works fine. I didn't change any settings.

Any ideas?

Are you using DHCP to assign settings? If so, check that you are being assigned a DNS server. For some reason, the Telkom Mega 100WR routers tend to mess things up there. If this is the case, try manually entering your DNS settings to see if it works THEN.

I added the DNS manually and it works. Any idea who, who, what to do to get it to work automatically? Is the issue with Telkom (my ISP) or XP?

Which DNS did you enter? Public DNS (internet) or local DNS, the router itself?

It was picking up the local DNS fine - 10.0.0.2 ...

I put the Telkom ISP DNS (from telkomsa.net) into the TCP/IP settings of my LAN connection.

Now I tried changing to my wireless connection (unplugged LAN and enabled wireless) and it stopped routing again. Entered the DNS and it works.

BUT interestingly it only worked when I put in the secondary DNS (196.43.1.11) it didn't work iwth only the primary and no secondary.

Ok, you are confusing me a bit though. For the sake of not having to change DNS settings in TCP/IP properties.

Look at this site:
www.opendns.com use those DNS settings (servers) and enter it into the "router". Set the TCP/IP settings to automatic and test it again.

You can save those DNS settings to the router. It might be something up with SAIX today in your area.

Ok thanks will try that.

I logged into the router and the DNS in the router which came from Telkom in automatic setup is different. Pri - 196.43.45.190 Sec - 196.43.46.190 .

I don't think it is just today. That link above from the MS technet is a few days old already.

Had exactly the same problem, Telkom Mega 105WR.

Installed SP3, no problems. After about 3 hours I lost all internet connectivity, could access the router. I can see/browse other workstations connected to the router but no internet, can't even ping the 41.* gateway.

If I make a direct PPPoE connection, bridging across the router, I can browse the web.

Rolled back to SP2 in the meantime.

Interesting, I noted that with SP2 installed, XP automatically picks up the DNS address from the router.

After installing SP3, XP still had the auto DNS adresses after reboot. After disabling & enabling the LAN adaptor, it automatically picked up and IP but without the DNS entries and I was again unable to access the internet.
Manually entering them in XP's LAN properties solved the problem.

I tested with a mate's NetGear ADSL router, setting XP to obtain an IP & DNS setting automatically. XP (with SP3) detected both automatically and I was able to browse normally.

Seems like this issue is only isolated to the Telkom/2C Telecoms Mega 100/105WR routers, & only when XP-SP3 is present.

Sound like the router is not doing DHCP and NAT properly, corrupted firmware is also a possibility

Come to think of it, the times I've experienced this with Telkom Mega 100 / 105 routers, the workstations have also been on SP3.

@Waaib: are the 2 working notebooks running SP3 too? Maybe try a roll-back on the non-working pc. That will help us ascertain whether the problem lies in SP3 or not

I have 4 laptops at home: 3 XP, 1 Vista. All worked fine for months on wifi and LAN.
Two of the machines, both Dell D620's, where formatted and re-installed last week.
SP3 was installed on both and both has this issue on wifi and LAN
The machines where rebuilt again and SP3 only installed on 1 of them.
The SP3 machine has the issue (on wifi and LAN) the SP2 machine is fine.

In all above cases a connection via 3G via a phone worked fine which is what made me thing DNS.

What I find wierd is that after the SP3 installation the SP3 machine worked for about 2 hours and then stopped working.

I have a Vista Business laptop and that has never had problems with internet access via the router. It is only after installing SP3 on the XP-Desktop that the problem starts - dunnow what the deal is?

I had initially used the DNS addresses on the telkomsa.net site but noticed that MSN didn't connect and some US sites didn't work. Replaced the DNS with the ones in my router (automatically supplied by telkom) and MSn and international works again.

I agree, it is a SP3 - Mega 100WR/105WR issue. Like I said before, I didn't have the same issue with a mate's Netgear router after installing SP3. Perhaps 2C-Telecoms can release updated firmware for these routers.

I sent an e-mail to 2C Telecoms describing the issue and what tests I've done. Let's see what their response is.
