Hi Guys,

I spotted a Freelander i'm pretty interested in. Anyone own/owned one?

Looking at the 2011 or 2012 model. Reviews seem to be only good.

I heard that they are troublesome. Dunno which iteration though

Seen the same, but that was Pre-2008 from what I could research. Apparently after that they seem to be built like trucks.

More specifically: Land Rover Freelander2 SD4 SE A/T

I'm selling a 2013 one, it's on AutoTrader (white one with brick wall behind).

Only selling because I upgraded to a D4, not worth having both.

Terrible idea.

LR are poorly built across the board and for all iterations.

Avoid this. No matter how neat it seems at first, you'll live to regret it.

Who stepped on your toes ?

I sold my last Landrover after 20 years (D1 V8), excellent build, still going well, only sold it because of age and fuel consumption. And now often regret having sold it. The new owner pimped it up and gave it to his son to do missionary work up in Zambia, I'm sure that it is still doing a sterling job.

Nobody complains about build quality, the only issues over the last 15 years has been the pre-facelift Freelander 1 transmission problem, and a few guys have had issues with the crankshaft breaking on the diesel 3L V6 on the D3/D4. The V8's are regarded as indestructable.

But the last diesel D4 problem discussed on 4x4 community had done almost 300 000 km before it broke, and yes, it probably shouldn't happen, but it is grossly exaggerated.

There have been zero transmission or engine problems with the Freelander 2, and the diesel engine in there is a highly reliable Peugeot/Ford unit (2.2l, 140kW, 420Nm). More power than the 3.9l V8i in the D1.

The Facelift Freelander 2's (2013 onwards) are magnificent. The only problem was the price, the last new ones sold for R550k. But still cheap compared to the current Freelander 3, aka the Discovery Sport. Pre 2013 FL2's are still fine, but not as up to date.

BTW, I don't really regard myself as a Landrover fan, I almost bought a Navara 4x4 a few months ago, but after comparing a new Navara to a newish D4 late last year I just had to get the D4.

I have the 2010 Freelander HSE. No issues whatsoever.
Average around 8l/km fuel consumption.

I saw that one :o. I'm buying on Finance though...

This is the feedback I want to hear. I went to look at one and just love the finishing on the inside. It's very spacious and the reason I'm looking at it was because I'm in the market for a Diesel/Auto SUV. The Fortuners are just way too over priced.

It's earlier than that, the pre-facelift Freelander 1 had a mismatched transmission.

Even the facelift Freelander 1's are fine.

Thanks, worthy info :)

Landrovers have been making owners into mechanics for last 65 years for a reason :P

Tsek! :p :D Diesels in general don't give issues. Driven a BMW lately. Wait till the errors start... I'm not getting rid of mine but I'm going to order a damn obdii reader since I started getting a Check engine light (yellow) and it gives me limp mode intermittently. I figured, just going to buy another vehicle and sort this one out in the mean time.

The boot space is not the largest, but that is the only real issue ito size.
The HSE comes with a built-in GPS, which is no longer up-gradable. It is cheaper to by a good TomTom/Garmin than paying for updated maps.
It is otherwise a well rounded SUV, and is quite capable off-road. You just need to take it a little slower.

Private to private finance is available and most banks do the paperwork for you

I've assisted a private buyer with finance. Not much of a hassle to be honest. Can be done easily :)

There is a reason land rover held the least reliable vehicle award for many years

No BMW's, Volvo, Mercedes, etc, etc vehicles in the top 10, according to your logic they are all cr*p ?

Complex and advanced vehicles tend to have more niggles.

Landrovers are often also subject to difficult conditions.

Stick to your Tazz if you want reliability.

The later versions of the FL2 get very good reviews, a LR anomaly.

Stay far away from the V6 D3 or D4 unless you have deep pockets and potentially want to splurge on an expensive engine rebuild. Some say yada yada it's all blown out of proportion but it's like someone giving you a live hand grenade with the pin in, it may not suddenly blow up for no reason but it'll put your teeth on edge. Actually a V6 D3 or D4 has more chance of randomly blowing its engine than the hand grenade has of blowing up, scary odds :crylaugh:
