Land speed record bid needs R400 million

The land speed record attempt by the Bloodhound Supersonic car at Hakskeenpan in the Northern Cape will now only take place in 2017, due to financial problems.

“The revised dates reflect the fact that, although interest in and support for the project have never been greater, a number of major funding deals are still in negotiation,” said project director Richard Noble.

As technically fascinating as this endeavour is, I struggle to see what milestone other than going faster than Thrust SSC, and since Thrust SSC already broke the sound barrier, is to be achieved? They are not going for Mach 2 or anything.

1000mph on land is the goal as far as I know.

I hate being a Luddite, but I'm sure the motoring world would be more impressed with something like : an electric car that can run for 500 km's at 120 km/h, or a petrol engine that could pull a family size car at 2 l/100 km. Those are worthwhile goals.

They are being looked at, and worked on..

This is a pure and simple technology pissing contest of can we run a vehicle at 1000mph on the ground. The technical issues in making that happen are not simple in the slightest.

A racing car? A racing track? Doesn't a race involve at least two entities? If you are the only one it is not a race.

That would be a poor investment of R400 million...can we at least get cigarette advertising on the side?

its sort of a combination between correspondence chess and rallying.

one guy posts a time and speed and then a few years later another guy posts a time and speed
