I'm looking for a laptop, I just need some opinions, very confused at the moment:

1) I have it narrowed down to HP, Dell and Sony Vaio.

2) I need it for internet, gaming, dvds etc. Basically home use, but I want a fairly good one : 2-3 gb RAM, good processor, good graphics card (I will be playing SIMS 3 on it)

3) Also want some extra features like a webcam, bluetooth, dual dvd drive etc.

4) A lot of people have told me to go for Apple iMac, but I don't know much about this. Can anyone explain what makes Mac different.

5) My budget is about R10000-R12000. Is that too little?

Any advice or answers would be much appreciated! I'm totally clueless.
Thanks:)

Vaio you pay for the brand name
Go for HP intel & stay away from AMD.
10k to 12k will get you something decent

Fifaya, have you looked at the Fujitsu Lifebook series? Or an IBM Thinkpad? The T-series Thinkpad and S series Lifebook are both very light and compact, with 13" or 14" screens. There are a few good laptops in the price range you've specified.

Thanks guys!

Drake, I really liked the Vaio CS 26. Other than paying for the brand name, do you think it's good?
I also like the HP Pavilion series.

I haven't looked at Lenovo yet, maybe that would be another choice. Thanks DJ_ Jyno.

I'm in Durban, Schwartz.

Similar problem here guys. Looking to spend R 10 000 - R 12 000.00 on a laptop for my Manager. IT guy isnt much help. What should I be looking for in that price range?

Tx in advance :)

PS. I'm techno illiterate so please keep it simple.

I wouldn't recommend HP actually. Maybe my unit was just a dud but here's whats wrong with it: Lightscribe DVD R/RW...broken. Wireless 802.11g...Broken. BIOS battery...Flat. Battery...Dead. Remote control reciever...Broken. And it all started just after the warrenty expired. And yes, stay away from AMD processors...

I have a brand new Macbook Aluminum 13" for sale for here on mybroadband - it's as nice as any Vaio. Has all the features you want, 2 gigs RAM, nVidia graphics, Core 2 Duo, as well as being super light and thin and has 5 hours battery life. It runs Windows perfectly and can play 3D games.

The new price of these is R16000 I'm selling for R13000, let me know if you're interested.

I would suggest stay away from HP....just cause I have 2 that broke at the same time, they dont appear to last.

Maybe consider a Toshiba Sattelite - I dont see how you could go wrong with:

17", 250gb hdd, 3gb memory, Intel 2.16 dual core, DVDRW, wireless, integrated webcam, Vista for R8500?

You should make a distinction between their consumer & business laptops.

The consumer ones suck. The business models I have never had a problem with.

Unless you want portability. In comparison, eg. The Macbook is much smaller, lighter & battery lasts 5 hours - probably double as long if not more.
