Laptop advice

So my bro-in-law decides to give my son a laptop as a gift, real beast of a machine, 60gb hd, 512mb ram.

What do I do ?
1. Upgrade it ?
2. Sell it ?

Upgrade would mean spending about a grand max. If I do, it would be a media server or for browsing and basic games for the kiddo (9yrs).
Bought a charger for it and it does power on, not sure of battery health yet.

If there is a way to use the screen to connect the ps3, then it will have that purpose.

Sell it and buy a tablet with windows on it. The new windows tablets come with the pc version of the operating system. You will get about 16gb on the windows tablet but will be able to use an external hard drive.

Rather get a Samsung 10.1 inch tablet...

Make & model?
CPU?

You could get some used ram (2GB) for it and it should be fine for browsing etc. Or put linux on it.

HP compaq nx7000
Pentium M, not sure of the speed, think it's 1.6.
 
IDE hard drive in that, if it was sata could have dumped a ssd in there and load a newer windows, long story short..

Use it as a doorstop.
 
Wondering whether it's better getting a windows tablet or android, he loves clash of clans

Game has a special on tablets till the 31st, buy 1 tablet and get the second at half price...

Will decide what to do with the laptop, very indecisive....
