Laptop Battery not Charging

Hi

I have a Toshiba L650. Yesterday I noticed that the battery indicator says "xx%, Plugged in,not charging" in Windows 7. I tried several things like:
1. Shut down and restart.
2. Check the brick - is warm to the touch
3. Went into device manager- MS-Compliatnt method batt control - scan for hardware changes
4. Removing the batterry and blowing out the terminals to remove dust.

For a while last night it charged up to 98% and stopped. Today I let it drop to 61% but it just just wont move up again. I tried surfing the net for solutions, no real simple fixes, but cant say if I tried all. The current slow international connection is equally frustrating.

Did any one have experience with this and how was it resolved. BTW what is a price of a new batt,
model No. PA3817U-1BRS.

Appreciate the assitance.

My HP netbook has the same problem
Its stuck at 36% but as soon as I unplug it switches off
 
Only keep battery in when you're mobile and have to otherwise when plugged in remove the battery to save its lifespan.

My sisters Toshiba also has the same issue.

Are you certain it is the battery? Wouldn't want to buy a battery for no reason :confused:

Is it not the charger or charging circuit on the laptop itself?
 
It could be charger, but usually a battery. One cell dead and battery will never reach nominal voltage (at which internal regulator stops charging) and other cells are overheating.

You can meassure battery voltage with multimeter. Single cell voltage of 80% charged battery is about 3.8V. Charger will stop charging when cell voltage reaches 4.1V-4.2V. Multiply these values by 3 and get expected voltage on typical laptop battery (3 cells in series).

I recently had the popular problem of Windows 7 battery manager malfunctioning and not charging my battery when plugged in. The battery was fine, the power supply was fine, and the motherboard was fine (I have enough laptops with the same specs in the Headspring office, and I was able to swap out parts to isolate the problem).

I also searched for this problem online, and many folks are having this problem with all makes of laptop computers. I found the steps that solved my problem here on the TechNet forums.

There are multiple solutions proposed, and here are the steps that fixed it for me:

Disconnect AC
Shutdown
Remove battery
Connect AC
Startup
Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).
Shutdown
Disconnect AC
Insert battery
Connect AC
Startup
Please comment if this fixes your problem so that others can solve their problem sooner. I was surprised at how many people were having this problem with Windows 7.

You could always try a linux livecd and see what it does there.
