I have inherited a Mecer laptop. It is a few years old but has hardly been used. It is a Pentium II and only has 128MB of RAM but I think it would be okay for what I would use it for - mainly docs in Word and emailing. It has Windows 98 on it. The only major problem is that the battery does not hold the charge. Does anyone know of a place where I could perhaps get the battery reconditioned? I am on the South Coast of KZN (Port Shepstone area) but could send it to Durban if needs be.

do you really need the battery can you not just plug it into the wall and use it.

Win '98 + internet =

Make sure you get a firewall, good AV and anti-spyware 1st.

Hey Lizard,
What model is the laptop? Can you post the model info and battery info (from the label on the battery) here.

This thread might be of interest to you:).

Do you think I could put Windows XP SP2 on the laptop?

I wouldn't recommend it. If you're feeling adventurous I'd say give a light-weight Linux distribution a try (as you only use it for office use), otherwise stick to Windows 98.

AVG 8 doesn't work on anything earlier than Windows 2000:o.

Thanks, I may change plan about using it for Internet. The reason why I wanted to do that is that I have a Huawei E220 Voda modem on my desktop and it makes a terrible noise on my landline phone when it downloads. I thought if I used the laptop to download at a distance from the landline I might not have that problem.

hey Lizard the only reason i asked is that i have bought 2 laptops both with faulty batteries so all i do is plug them into the mains. i dont plan on taking them anywhere that i need the battery for. both laptops are setup for anything (the one has windows xp pro, not sure on the other one) and have internet access the works.

was told the battery would cost more than the whole laptop.

I was going to use AVG free which is what I use on my desktop computer.

You can, but it will be next to useless.

You can try out a lightweight Linux distro (recommended), or stick to winders98 (not recommended)...

sorry, but why would Windows Xp Pro with Service Pack 2 be a problem on a laptop, the reason i am asking is i just bought a laptop with exactly that on it.
