Hi there i have ans acer travelmate 8204wlmi all of a sudden the lcd is blank only works on an external display i thought it was the backlight inverter but took it in to get another inverter the shop tested it and even put a new one in still blank they tested the lcd as well working fine outside the laptop on there test bench now i dont know what it could be anyone had a simular problem that can help me. Thanks.

Torch method: Do you see some shade of image under strong torch?
Are you sure that inverter is enabled? One input pin will enable inverter. There is also other one or dimming (PWM control).

No there in no image under torch light that is the first thing i checked also when i connect an external display and go to the control pannel in windows7 the lcd is not there under devices.

It means that internal display is not recognised at boot, it could wiring contact problem or corrupted boot credentials. Try to flash BIOS (for some brands you have to use override switch to flash the same version), or full CMOS reset, read support page, usually by pressing power button for a minute with battery and power adapter disconnected, leave it for a night after doing it.

It could be also internal power supply failure, meaning no power coming to the LCD panel or blown rasterizer chip. In such case only professional service doing component repairs could help. Not sure Acer is doing that.

Eventually found a place to look at my laptop and beleve it or not the graphics chip some of the pins had desoldered. Cost 300 rand to repair and a laptop stand with a fan to keep it working.
