Does any1 know the difference: Intel Core Duo 1.6 and Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 ?? I can get the HP 530 Core Duo for R5999 and an Acer Core 2 Duo for same price www.zones.co.za

Which one's better ?

k... it seems the c2d is the clear winner. Thing is, the Acer only has 512 ram with Vista  So why not the HP 530 with Core Duo ?? Is it like way slower or what ??

Thanx WKJ. Now I def. want the c2d. But here's the facts: My budget is 6k. Both are the same price, but the HP has more ram and 15.4 lcd vs the Acer has 512 ram and 14.1 lcd. Personally, I prefer the 15.4 lcd, looks much more cool ;) Unless theres a c2d laptop somewhere out there with the 15.4 lcd for 6k ?? -----confused-----

No problem :)

Well, if you search around at the online stores you might just find something :) At any rate, the CoreDuo won't be too bad, one of the laptops in my home has a 1.8GHz CoreDuo and it performs excellently, but it's running Windows XP at the moment. But if you can get a Core2Duo system that suits your needs, take that :)

Thanx alot guys, it seems I must now shop around for a c2d - 1mb - 15.4" - notebook for 6k ;)

the difference between core duo and core2duo is about 5%, and the 64bit extensions.

you wont notice it, honestly, but you will notice a bigger screen

here is a better review

i'd ignore the link to the yahoo article posted earlier in this thread, as the pleb says the chips are built by microsoft, so I assume he also thinks they were made using fairy dust and consume baby poo-poo whilst running.

wiki (and othewr nonsense sites) believe the differen between core duo and core 2 duo is around 20%. which is fine, but when put into the same notebook chassis and constrained by the same bottlenecks then the real world difference is about a half a gnat's ball hair.

Well, that puts a whole new view on the subject, thanks. Gonna do a bit more homework before i buy... tho it i'm still keen on the core duo with 15.4" display ;)

also, i reckon none of these people above actually ran vista with 512mb ram.
there are more enjoyable things to do in life.

that said, c2d is newer tech. so maybe that counts for something somewhere. but i do know at all times the screen of the core duo laptop is bigger, whereas maybe sometimes depending on what you are doing the c2d will be an itsy bit faster. if you get my drift.

Look, my purchase of a new notebook is def. not for gaming, multitasking and other cpu intensive tasks. For that, I have my desktop quad :D In saying that tho, I currently use a Pentium M 1.6 Dell notebook, it serves my purpose, but is really slow. So, from a Pentium M 1.6 with 512 ram to a Core Duo 1.6 with 1gb ram, I reckon that shud get the job done comfortably.

THe other thing is of course that the Acer is a complete piece of **** notebook, probably put together by a 5 year old.

The HP notebook on the other hand, is made properly and will last!

that for me is far more important that which one is 10% faster.

First one I found on Google ;) Didn't really read through it myself...
