Hi, recently I installed this thing, which tells me when my cpu is overheating. Now, I am busy shrinking a dvd, and copying a file from hdd to laptop. The cpu load is 85% the whole time, and the temperature above 80 C the whole time. The laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens, and cpu is a celeron M 1.60 GHz. Is the temp normal?

No. Thermal damage starts at ~65C afaik. 80 is not cool.

The temp sensor might be dead/wrong though. Does the PC lag?

What prog are you using to read the sensor?

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D7830 laptop. The CPU is around 65-68degC when idle, when busy it goes around 72-75degC.

Never got it to hit 80degC - only way is to block all the vents

Above 80 is not good - do download speedfan and report back.

Best to do is to switch laptop off overnight, start it up first thing in the morning, and make a screenshot of the temperatures.

After 15 to 30 minutes, do another screenshot and compare the two - you'll be able to see which's the CPU.

It can also be due to a faulty CPU fan, or blocked CPU heatsink.

Will try and download speedfan in trhe morning. Virgin let down again. All the vents is open, but if the temps stay this high, I'll open the laptop and check if I can clean inside. Thanks for all the input.

 They obviously didn't design those things with long-term use in mind if such high temps are the norm.

AFAIK, Pentium M processors cannot be damaged due to overheating. The processor will automatically lower the frequency until the temperature is in range.

I think that the software you are using is reading the sensor incorrectly. I've played a bit with the sensors on Linux and found that each MB manufacturer gives a different reading for the same temperature. Do you have the latest version of software installed? Also check in the BIOS what the reported temperature it.

There's nothing wrong with your laptop. During dvd shrink or burn tremendous amounts of load is put on the CPU, Ram, etc. In fact, on my Dell D600 while burning a DVD, the drive decided to pop. My fault because this was done while I was in bed, and the side vents for the laptop was probably blocked by the duvet :( Bottom line, whilst using the DVD for shrink or burn, try and keep the laptop vents open, as the CPU is working overtime.

During ordinary multitasking you'll notice your laptop is fine ;)
