Hi there

I am currently living in the UK and may have to return to SA soonish. I am wondering if it is worth buying a laptop here rather than in SA. There are, of course pro's and con's. If the thing doesn't work properly, you can't just take it back and get it fixed/replaced. I am also not 100% sure about import duties and how that will work. I am shipping my household goods.

Any thoughts?

Well you will have to look at the price, it it is worth while to take the risk if any. Had very little problems with my notebooks over the years.

My obvious advise would be to stay in the UK, with the state that Eskom is in you won't have power to charge the notebook...

Just got loadsheded as I was typing this

I got a entry level AMD X2 machine for £399 (Acer Aspire 7250) from Tesco. (80gig hdd, 1gig ram, 17" LCD)

but to run vista properly, double the RAM to 2 gig :D

Some manufacturers, Acer is one, offer travel warranty so you are covered for warranty faults here too.

As not all areas sell the same model, it would be worth checking that the model you want is also sold in RSA, otherwise there is a possibility that spares won't be available. Might be worth emailing RSA support to check.

Thanks guys for all the info! I was wondering about import duties - under which circumstances are they payable and how much is it.

Anyone know??

buy a case for it and carry it onto with your hand luggage, then just walk out with it.
