Laptop given to Cidac computers returned with hard disc missing

SAPS said that since the PC was handed in willingly, it is not theft. Of course they know what a 2.5" hard disc looks like, this was just an excuse given off the cuff. I am going in there tomorrow with 2 large friends and an attitude

You have two avenues to use.

Tarsus Technologies are HP distributors and should quote for replacement and labour (probably a lot more than the pc nerds down the road) and will be the foundation for a Small Claims Court action.

SAPS are mostly too idle to do the docket paperwork.
On one occasion I phoned General Lamoer after Diep River dragged their heels and the case was transferred to Wynberg as a result.

A combination of these might help produce a satisfactory resolution.

The manager probably has a lot of unhappy customers and should watch out for his car, wherever he parks it.

Do you deal in PCs?
If yes...

Make sure the claim includes labour charges that would be incurred for reloading(new hdd) and data transfer(what was needed)

True- add some fat to the replacement quote.

Good luck for the fight- let us know how it goes!

Apparently she spilled a cup of coffee over the keyboard and it switched itself off.
It is usually recovable by cleaning. Maybe is not over yet assuming battery was removed to prevent corrosion.

Re claim in Smail Claims Court. Not only for the price of hard drive, but also for data lost due to negligence or theft. With your claim request copy of workshop receipt record. If it doesn't say hard drive missing, you have a case.

They are "looking" for it, but said they have a bin-full of them, some working, some not. Sounds like a disaster to me. At least we now know it is a 160Gb SATA HDD as that is what the spec says when the laptop was purchased in December 2009

The hard drive is in separate pocket, it would not be damaged by spilling, unlikely at least. You might be able to retrieve model number and serial number from official laptop service centre. Good sign they are trying to resolve problem.
