Laptop is a data vacuum cleaner

Hi guys,

Im honestly at my wits end here, but I have a Lenovo SL510 with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Fresh install, minus Lenovo bloatware) and something on this laptop is chewing through my data at a rate I've never in my life seen before. It's chewed through 1GB in 10 minutes, and it isn't updates, as all of them are turned off.

I suspect it's one of the Lenovo drivers doing something, as my other laptop (Acer Aspire *something*) doesn't suffer from tis fault.

I've patched my hosts file with Spybot, yet still the problem persists

No viruses, malware, spyware or the like, I checked

Any thoughts?

I think many people on this forum wish they could download a Gig in 10 minutes.

If you not using a 3G data card and connecting via lan download and install Netlimiter, it should show you what is eating the data

I assume you have a firewall working... open it up and view active connections, else install one like comodo which will show you.

Netlimeter is your best option.
You can drill down untill it shows you what prograp/application/process is using your data.
Had the same issue with some windoze silly program called BING or BLING.
Program was not used, but just kept sucking data for no apparent reason.

I second this get comodo and block the suckers that is eating your data

I used the Windows firewall, works fine for my needs.

Last night the damn thing managed to (only) Hoover up about half a gig in half an hour.

The last time I tried to sort this problem I was using ZoneAlarm, and I told it to block everything and prompt me if anything wants to connect, and thanks to that I have been able to narrow it down to a problem with SVCHOST.exe

Incidentally I only seem to have this problem with Windows 7, not Windows 8 on the same machine. I would go back to Windows 8 if it wasn't for the problem with my memory card reader failing to play ball with it, but I'll check it out again on Saturday when I'm finally back home

I think you are talking about BITS. My laptop was fine until one day, bang, used 2GB within a couple of hours. Took met a couple of hours to figure that BITS was the culprit.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I think you can find it under Services in Task Manager. I remember turning it off only worked for a while, then it would switch on automatically again. Eventually I disabled it completely somehow, and then everything was back to normal.

If BITS is your problem, try to disable it and check your download rate. Mine dropped instantly.

Oh, and if I recall correctly I also narrowed it down from Svchost being the initial problem, BITS is part of it.

Windows 7 resource manager... network tab. See all your network connections , programs using them etc.

That is ringing a few rather loud bells somewhere in the back of my mind. If memory serves me right BITS is used for Windows Updates in general. Only potential speed bump is Security Essentials relies on BITS for its updates, but I can manually download the definition files for it when the need arises
