Hey all,

Not posted in a while. Looking for a fairly decent laptop with a tight budget. About 4.3k max. Ive looked around but cant find anything I like online. Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

Do you have any specific requirements? Screen size etc.

Just quickly browsed through one of our latest pricelists, if you dont want to spend more than R4300 you are looking at something like:

ASUS X SERIES: X54C - INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE B940 2.0GHZ PROCESSOR, 2GB DDR3 1333MHZ MEMORY (1X 2GB ONBOARD - 1 ADDITIONAL SLOT), 500GB 5400RPM HDD

or

Inspiron 1018 : Intel N455 Single Core (1.66GHz,667MHz FSB,512K L2 Cache), 10.1in WSVGA True Life Display (1024 x 600), 0.3 Mega Pixel Camera, 2048MB (1x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel, 320GB Serial ATA (5400RPM), Wifi+ BT, Win 7 Starter 32bit, 2Yr On-Site Warranty

A few very entry HP's and Lenovo laptops as well.

How about asus k53u?has a e-450 AMD apu.seems nice.what do you want to do with it?Dion wired has some bday specials.check it out.

Thanks, yeah iv'e checked out the K53U but decided against it since plenty of people complained about it being really slow. Looking at the Toshiba C660 now.

For R4k, you should at the very least get a laptop with the following specs:
1) Windows 7 Home Basic, and not Starter
2) A dual core CPU, like an Core i3 and not a single core or Celeron CPU. The AMD E-450 is quite a bit slower than the Dual Core B940.
3) 2-4GB of RAM
4) Wireless N (802.11n)
5) 1366x768 or higher resolution for a 15"+ laptop
6) 2+ year warranty if you're lucky
The Asus laptop (X54C with the Intel Dual Core B940) is pretty decent for its price.

Esquire has a very good Toshiba C660 (Sandy Bridge i5, 3GB RAM, Win7 Home Basic x64) for R3999 (ex VAT), which is just above your budget:

I bought an LG laptop at DionWired a couple of months ago for R3000 and it had pretty decent specs too:
Core i3 390M, 2GB RAM, Win 7 Home Basic 32-bit

Spec & budget wise the best that I've seen so far is the MSI CR640 (Intel Dual Core B950, 2GB RAM, Win7 Home Basic x64, 1yr warranty) for around R4.1k:

Your Asus laptop is pretty similar (slower CPU and smaller battery, but bigger HDD).

Have you even read my or NomNom's posts? Also take note that it is R3999 EXCLUDING VAT, which would mean that it actually costs R4558.86.

I got Packard bell at Makro for R3999 last month

i3 2.4 ghz
4gigs ram
2 gig standard graphics if I remember right
free adobe photoshop and everything else you need like hdmi/good webcam etc and looks nice

If you haven't bought a laptop already, Esquire now has a special on the Lenovo C850 for R3599 (ex VAT) = R4102.86 (incl VAT) (Sandy Bridge i3 2350M, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6" (1366x768), Win7 Home Basic x64): http://www.esquire.co.za/specials/2012_07_14Spotlight.html

I would actually recommend upgrading the RAM to 4GB if your budget allow it.
2GB So-DIMM DDR3 1333MHz shouldn't cost you more than R150 (incl VAT).
